The Fire Phone was going to be Amazon’s arrival in the design world. The Kindle was a breakthrough e-book reader, sure. But it was too utilitarian to be an object of desire, the sort of budget device you’d expect from a budget retailer. Developing a premium smartphone could ascend Amazon to the rare air of Apple, transforming it into a company that could make covetable things. This was important to Jeff Bezos. As he said in an early memo , he wanted Amazon to be like Apple or Nike, “loved” by customers and perceived as “cool.” “Risk taking is cool. Thinking big is cool. The unexpected is cool,” he wrote then. Ficklin worked for months under clandestine conditions he … [Read more...] about The complicated design legacy of Jeff Bezos
Former LSU head football coach Les Miles was placed on administrative leave from his coaching job at the University of Kansas on Friday, after a report released that day showed a pattern of "inappropriate behavior" with female students at LSU. Kansas athletic director Jeff Long announced in a statement Friday evening that Miles was placed on administrative leave "as we conduct a full review to determine the appropriate next steps." No timeline was given of when a final decision would be made, and Long noted that Kansas officials have only been able to access the reports on the allegations against Miles in the last two days. "Even though the allegations against him occurred at LSU, we take these matters very seriously at KU," Long said in the statement. "Now that we have access to this information, we will take the coming days to fully review the material and to see if any additional information is available. I do not want to speculate on a timeline for our review because it … [Read more...] about Les Miles placed on administrative leave at Kansas, AD Jeff Long announces

Among the lasting impacts the coronavirus will have on NASCAR is showing the sport it can be nimble with schedules, formats and races in ways few thought possible. Just as impactful, though, could be who will be Cup crew chiefs in the future. How those positions are filled could be changing as a result of these times. Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing and Stewart-Haas Racing are among organizations that have promoted an engineer with no significant crew chief experience to lead Cup teams in recent years. But with many Cup teams no longer sending engineers to races in this era of crew limits, will that trend continue? Two of this year’s new Cup crew chiefs came from the Camping World Truck Series and two moved up from the Xfinity Series. MORE: Ben Beshore charting Kyle Busch’s course correction Engineers have been among those squeezed by NASCAR’s crew limits. In 2019, Cup teams were limited to 12 road crew members, not including the pit crew, at the track. … [Read more...] about Friday 5: Could the pandemic impact future crew chief hires?
As the Sabres continue to lose games and inch their way toward a 10th consecutive non-playoff season, the trade speculation surrounding Jack Eichel is only going to continue to build. It seems unlikely that a trade will happen this season, and it may not even happen during the offseason. But there is now enough smoke that it would not be a shock to see something happen before his no-movement clause kicks in before the 2022-23 NHL season. The Sabres need another rebuild, Eichel is going to be tired of losing, and it just seems like something that could happen sooner rather than later. So what would such a trade look like? It is a unique situation because players this good, this young, and signed long-term do not typically get traded. Players like that are franchise building blocks that teams tend to keep at all costs. There are not a lot of comparisons for such a deal. But we still tried to find some to try and guess an approximate value. Given the speculation every fan and … [Read more...] about What would a potential Jack Eichel trade look like? History offers some clues
