The Blind man was brought to the synagogue before the Pharisees, and they questioned him, "How did this happen?" The man told them, "He put mud on my eyes and I washed and then I could see!" The Pharisees were not happy to hear about the wonderful thing that had happened to the man. They began to talk and argue among themselves. One man said, "This man does not come from God." Another said "He must be from God." We never heard of a miracle like this before." When they couldn't agree among themselves, they said, "Let's call his parents and talk with them."Soon the mother and father of the blind man were brought before them. They were afraid of the Pharisees, and they did not want to say very much. They knew that the Pharisees hated Jesus and would put anyone out of the synagogue who said he believed in Him. The Pharisees said to them. "Is this your son whom you say was born blind? How did he get his eyes opened?" The father and mother replied, "Yes, he is our son and we know that he was … [Read more...] about Jesus and the Blind Man Part 2
Jesus heals the blind man
In the beginning of the Bible we read that darkness was everywhere. Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light....and God saw that it was good. And God divided the light from the darkness, and He called the light Day and the darkness He called Night, Gen. 1:3-5. John 1:3 says that all things were made by the Lord Jesus, so we know that He made the light and the sun. When Jesus said of Himself, "I am the light of the world," what did He mean? Was He talking about the light which is our day? In His teaching He used things from the earthly life to teach about the heavenly life, and things about the body to teach about the life of the soul and spirit. When God made Adam He put His life in Adam's spirit. Then when Adam sinned, God's life was taken away because sin separates 1 John 1:5b. At Bellarmine, an all-boys Catholic school in San Jose, Calif., I was often the token Muslim and probably the only person who began freshman year thinking the Eucharist sounded like the name of a comic book villain. I eventually learned it’s a ritual commemorating the Last Supper. At the monthly Masses that were part of the curriculum, that meant grape juice and stale wafers were offered to pimpled, dorky teenagers as the blood and body of Christ. During my time there, I also read the King James Bible and stories about Jesus, learned about Christian morality, debated the Trinity with Jesuit priests and received an A every semester in religious studies class. Twenty years later, I can still recite the “Our Father” prayer from memory. Growing up, I’d been taught that Jesus was a major prophet in Islam, known as “Isa” and also referred to as Even though I don’t personally celebrate Christmas, the season always makes me think of his legacy of … [Read more...] about What a Muslim Could Teach Trump Supporters About Jesus
(CNN)When Joaquin Phoenix took on the role of Jesus in the new film "Mary Magdalene," he did many of the expected things: Grew long hair, adopted an intense and otherworldly stare, even meditated on a mountaintop. But there was one thing he would not do. Near the beginning of "Mary Magdalene," which opened Friday in the United States, the script called for Jesus to heal a blind woman by rubbing mud in her eyes, an echo of John's Gospel. (It's a blind man in the Bible, a blind woman in the film.) "I knew about that scene from the Bible, but I guess I had never really considered it," Phoenix told CNN in a recent interview. "When I got there, I thought: I'm not going to rub dirt in her eyes. Who the f*!# would do that? It doesn't make any sense. That is a horrible introduction to seeing." Read More The Bible doesn't fully explain why Jesus used mud or clay to heal the blind, though some experts say it was a common practice among first-century healers. In "Mary Magdalene," … [Read more...] about Joaquin Phoenix plays Jesus in a new film. Here’s one thing he refused to do.
In one particular scene in the movie, Phoenix was required to perform a miracle from John's gospel. According to the holy text, Jesus healed a blind man by rubbing mud in his eyes. However, the actor refused to do the scene. Instead, Phoenix decided to simply lick his thumb and rub the woman's eyes. Although no mud was used, the star of the film argues it doesn't take away from the miracle Jesus performed.
