Spoiler Alert! This review contains spoilers for West Coast viewers of The Little Mermaid Live! Disney’s library will never be short on projects to adapt, but of all things Mouse The Little Mermaid must be one of the most challenging to turn live-action because of all that water. On Tuesday night, Disney took the sea creatures to another level with ABC’s hybrid musical event and Moana star Auli’i Cravalho — a fairly magical combo that suggests these hybrids can float, if not quite as swimmingly as one might hope. The live telecast was basically an airing of the 1989 animated Disney classic about idealistic mermaid Ariel fascinated with land and the humans who occupy it, especially Prince Eric. She makes a deal Ursula the sea witch, things immediately go sideways and she questions her life choices. Just after calling the general election, Boris Johnson’s government made two almost simultaneous policy announcements that encapsulated the longstanding contradictions of environmental policy over the past decade. His decision to announce a moratorium on fracking – which the Labour party pointed out was a temporary commitment rather than a ban – made headlines and was heralded as a signal of green intentions, but the go-ahead for a new deep coalmine in Cumbria was slipped out to little fanfare. The conflicting signals were in keeping with a decade of green policy under the Conservative-led coalition and two Tory governments, in which U-turns and see-sawing policy changes have cheered and infuriated campaigners and green businesses alike. A 25-year environment plan and a target for net zero carbon emissions by 2050 have been highlights since the last general election, but the policies needed to implement them remain mired in confusion. “[There has been] a … [Read more...] about Are the Tories’ green commitments all talk and little action?
Walking into this year’s Frieze Masters, where art made before the 21st century is for sale, one of the first stands is done up as a sort of seaside garden. There’s a pond, a profusion of plants and pebbles, a decorative old watering can and a white beach hut. On the door hangs a sign, the words “gone fishing” chalked on a bit of slate. Dear God. The whole thing is meant to evoke Barbara Hepworth’s garden and studio in St Ives. Hepworth’s sculptures stand around on plinths among the rocks, and amid clumps of coastal grasses and a jungle of green foliage. It gets worse. The plants are artificial and there are stuffed seagulls on the roof of the hut and by the pond. The labels to the artworks are chalked on slate. Who is the Dickinson gallery (“private advisors and fine art dealers”, its website says) trying to kid? And why aren’t the gallery staff wearing stripy T-shirts and fisherman’s cable-knit jumpers to complete the … [Read more...] about Frieze Masters review – treasures mixed with kitsch in art’s big tent
Perrie Edwards is already getting into the Christmas spirit by giving herself a very festive - and very rude - new nickname. The Little Mix singer, 26, called herself "Tinsel T**s" as she sported a Christmassy corset in her latest Instagram picture. She teamed the corset with some matching frilly sleeves, giving the sexy outfit more of a vintage feel. Perrie's blonde bob was worn in chic beachy waves and she sported a striking coat of orange and yellow eyeshadow. She captioned the post: "Who's been naughty & who's been nice?" Perrie added the hashtag #tinselt**s and included Christmas tree and present emojis. Her stunning snap was quickly flooded with compliments from her Instagram followers.
