BOULDER, CO -- We know research suggests that overly sterile home environments can lead to asthma and allergies in kids, but new research now suggests children raised with pets and bacteria-laden dust grow up to have less stress and possibly better mental health. A new study published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) shows a slower inflammatory immune response to a stressful environment among people who were raised in the country with animals than urban dwellers in pet-free homes. The study, co-authored by researchers from the University of Ulm in Germany and the University of Colorado Boulder, supports the "hygiene hypothesis," that overly sterile environments can breed health problems. The research also suggests that raising kids around pets might be good for mental health - for reasons people might not expect. "It has already been very well documented that exposure to pets and rural environments during development is beneficial in terms of … [Read more...] about Pets And Dirt For Kids May Lead To Lower Stress As Adults: Study
ACROSS COLORADO – Summerlike weather has arrived to much of the United States, and with it comes one of the most dangerous time for kids, 42 of whom died in hot cars last year. A new report from the National Safety Council shows that even as deaths due to vehicular heatstroke rise, fewer than half of U.S. states have any kind of law addressing it. Every state, including ours, is lacking in protection, failing to receive an A grade from the safety council. What does exist in 21 states is a patchwork of laws, only eight of which include the possibility of felony charges when children are deliberately left alone in hot cars. Some laws lack teeth — police in Rhode Island, for example, give a verbal warning if someone leaves a child alone in a car. Other laws suggest there are time periods when children are "safe" in a hot car, the opposite of what the National Safety Council wants people to know: Children are never safely left unattended in a car. Colorado got a C from the … [Read more...] about Hot Car Deaths: Colorado Has Weak Laws To Protect Kids – Study

FEARS are growing for a mum and her three kids who vanished three days ago in Glasgow. Kellyann Crosbie, 25, a boy aged two and girls aged three and four have not been seen since the early hours of Wednesday. Cops have launched a frantic search for the family of four, and are urging anyone with information to come forward. Inspector Jim McLaughlin said last night: “For whatever reason Kellyann left her flat with her children around 1.45am on Wednesday morning and not been in touch with family for almost three days now. “We believe that she may be in the company of her sister somewhere in Knightswood or north of the city, possibly Maryhill. "It’s possible they are staying with friends, however, even if that’s the case, we still need to know that the children are OK.“While Kellyann has taken off with her children before without letting people know where she is, our priority is to make sure the children are safe and well. "With that in mind, I would ask that … [Read more...] about Fears for mum and three kids missing for three days after vanishing in Glasgow
