Excitement around the main venues as curtains go up for another edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala

· December 5, 2019 ·

It is that time of the year when the crow pheasant soars high on the silver screen; the time when all roads lead to cinemas; the time when the city makes its annual rendezvous with world cinema; the time when the stars come down to earth and when every one is a cinephile and a film critic. Commercial releases are put on hold for one week at the theatres participating in the IFFK. Colourful banners, festoons and posters come up on the premises along with makeshift canteens and festival offices. Tagore Theatre also sees a rush of delegates and participants at the media cell, festival office of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy and screening centres. SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain (AP) — The Brazilian film “Pacificado” (Pacified), directed by American Paxton Winters, has won the top prize at Spain’s San Sebastian film festival. The jury awarded the “Golden Shell” at Saturday’s gala to the Portuguese-language film, which was produced by filmmaker Darren Aronofsky. “Pacificado” depicts the life of a teenage girl growing up on the rough streets of Rio de Janeiro’s favelas and her friendship with a former drug dealer. Bukassa Kabengele also won best actor for “Pacificado.” The best director award went jointly to Spaniards Aitor Arregi, José Goenaga and Jon Garaño for “La Trinchera Infinita” (The Infinite Trench). It tells the story of a man who at the start of the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War went into hiding for over three decades. … [Read more...] about Brazilian ‘Pacificado’ wins top prize at Spain film festival

The opening night event allowed plenty of chance for mingling before and after a quadri-lingual ceremony that still managed to wrap up in just 45 minutes. After a trio of tenors opened proceedings with “Over The Rainbow” it was evident that glamour and celebration were the intended take-aways, not the challenging themes presented by several of the IFFAM’s selected films, and certainly not political discourse. Nick Broomfield on his damning Whitney Houston film: ‘She had very little control over her life’

· April 26, 2017 ·

The title of Nick Broomfield’s new documentary about Whitney Houston echoes a question she often asked herself: “Can I be me?” Apparently, she often could not. According to Broomfield’s damning film, Houston had to repress her true self throughout much of her life, due to a perfect storm of factors, which included her controlling mother, Cissy Houston; her pushy record company, Arista; her co-dependent husband, Bobby Brown; her conflicted sexuality; and the mountain of drugs she used to blot all of that out. “Having to be someone else – to play the ‘Whitney character’ – was something that became impossibly difficult,” says Broomfield. “From an early age, she had very little control over her life.” Whitney: Can I Be Me? – which has its premiere at the Tribeca film festival this week – pivots on a wealth of frank interviews with backup singers, hairdressers, bodyguards and marketing people, all of whom … [Read more...] about Nick Broomfield on his damning Whitney Houston film: ‘She had very little control over her life’
