— anand mahindra (@anandmahindra) May 28, 2020 To alleviate my annoyance at the word ‘webinar’ my family suggested more customised labels... a webinar organised by a gentleman from Chennai would be a ‘Webinarayan’. A webinar by a guru would be a ‘Swaminar’. More ideas are welcome..😊 https://t.co/Rybt17mscA … [Read more...] about Anand Mahindra asks for customised versions of the word webinar. MUMBAI: The fundamental feature of tax treaty — a bilateral pact between two countries to resolve issues of double taxation — has come under question. According to a ruling by the Federal Court of Australia, the payments received by an Indian company from its clients in Australia will be taxed in Australia. The Australian superior court has treated such payments as ‘royalty’ — which can be taxed, even though such proceeds cannot be taxed under local Australian laws. The verdict — relating to one of India’s leading companies Tech Mahindra — goes against the underlying tenet of tax treaties which, as is widely accepted, should be used as shield for the taxpayer and not as sword by the taxman. A tax treaty is used to provide relief and not aimed at imposing tax. “It’s an accepted principle that standalone provision in a treaty does not give the power to impose tax. On the other hand, whenever treaty provisions are beneficial … [Read more...] about Tax treaties under scanner as Australia court says Tech Mahindra to be taxed
Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra on Saturday mooted moving away from the term 'lockdown', saying it needs to have a defined tenure. A day ahead of the fourth phase of nationwide lockdown to end, Mahindra suggested 'Unlock 1.0' for the way forward. "A lockdown, by definition needs to have a defined tenure and perhaps the word itself needs to have a limited shelf life," he said in a tweet. Mahindra further said, "Maybe we now need to move away from the term and find an alternate for the way forward..'Unlock 1.0??'". Earlier this week, he had stated that lockdown extensions are not just economically disastrous but also create another medical crisis due to its psychological effects. Mahindra had earlier proposed comprehensive lifting after 49 days of lockdown, while acknowledging that the choices are not easy for policy makers but a lockdown extension won't help. BENGALURU: India’s cash rich IT services companies are eyeing captive technology centres of global corporations, as they gear up to provide IT and back-office services at lower costs and offset a demand slowdown from the US and European markets in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. In the last three years, many global firms have either expanded their global in-house centres or set up new ones in India, looking to own the digital and analytics-based tech operations within the company as it became strategic. The global economic slowdown has, however, made some of these companies shed costs and outsource work to large services companies. India has nearly 1,300 captives across cities and they together employ nearly one-fourth of the 4.3 million workers in the $191-billion IT-Business Process Management sector. “We have seen a 50% jump in captive search. Our records show that searches have gone up in March and April. Enterprises are searching for captive monetisation, those … [Read more...] about Indian IT companies look at captive data centre to fuel growth and revival
