The daughter of current Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, Sara Duterte, is the Philippines’ top choice for president in 2022, followed closely by boxer-turned-senator Manny Pacquiao, according to a recent survey conducted by the Philippine polling firm OCTA Research. OCTA surveyed 1,200 Filipinos face-to-face from January 26 to February 1, asking them which presidential candidate they would vote for if the Philippines’ next general election, slated for May 2022, were held today. About 22 percent of respondents answered Sara Duterte for president, followed by “Sen. Grace Poe with 13 percent, Sen. Manny Pacquiao and former Sen. Bongbong Marcos with 12 percent each, and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno with 11 percent,” CNN Philippines reported on February 23. Sara Duterte currently serves as the mayor of Davao City on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao — a post her father Rodrigo Duterte held for decades before being elected president of the Philippines in 2016 — while … [Read more...] about Sara Duterte, Manny Pacquiao Top Poll for Philippines’ Next President

Tebow Joined By Barkley, Pacquiao, A-Rod, and Others for ‘All-Star Night to Shine’
Night To Shine was different this year. The annual prom-like bash run by the Tim Tebow Foundation for special needs guests had to go virtual due to COVID-19. But, the party went on as best as possible thanks to Tebow and several of his friends, many of them from the world of sports. Usually, Night To Shine is a huge, in-person party. Churches, schools, and dining halls are packed to the gills on a night close to Valentine’s Day. The special needs guests enter on a red carpet, enjoy lots of food, and dance the night away. Unlike those first six years, the 2021 edition of the event was mostly held online. Many churches ran a Shine-Thru before the event. That gave the kings and queens (Tebow’s honored guests) the chance to pick up their crowns and gift baskets while staying in their vehicles. Then Friday, the Night To Shine virtual experience was presented. Tebow, the legendary Florida Gators quarterback and current New York Mets farmhand, along with his wife, and their ridiculously … [Read more...] about Tebow Joined By Barkley, Pacquiao, A-Rod, and Others for ‘All-Star Night to Shine’
Boxing: I will end Pacquiao’s career, says Brandon Rios
HONG KONG (AFP) - Brandon Rios believes Filipino great Manny Pacquiao will draw inspiration in the wake of Super Typhoon Haiyan, but that won't stop him trying to send the eight-weight world champion into retirement. Rios sent his condolences after the giant storm slammed into the Philippines, leaving about 4,000 people dead and three million homeless, but said will have little sympathy for his opponent once they step in the ring for the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) welterweight title fight at the Venetian Macau resort on Sunday. Pacquaio's trainer Freddie Roach said last week that he would have no hesitation in telling Pacquiao, who turns 35 next month, to quit if he suffered a third straight defeat in his "must-win" battle against Rios in Macau. The "PacMan" has been one of the best pound-for-pound boxers of his generation, winning 10 world titles at eight different weights. But the Filipino's legacy suffered in 2012 with his first defeats in seven years: a controversial … [Read more...] about Boxing: I will end Pacquiao’s career, says Brandon Rios
Boxing: Manny Pacquiao impresses in first spar session
MANILA, Philippines - Manny Pacquiao sparred for the first time Tuesday afternoon (Wednesday in Manila) and looked like he'd never left the ring. The eight-division world champion, preparing for his megabuck bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 2 in Las Vegas, tested Finn lightweight Edis Tatli for two rounds and then took on Chicago lightweight prospect Kenneth Sims Jr. for three rounds at the closed-door Wild Card Gym in Hollywood. Pacquiao did not disappoint as he showed the 5-foot-10 Smith (5-0, 2 knockouts) and the 5-foot-9 Tatli (24-1, 8 KOs) the hand and foot speed he's noted for. Chief trainer Freddie Roach was impressed. "Manny looked so fresh today," Roach told Philboxing.com. "I'm very happy with what he showed me. You couldn't tell he had been away from the ring since the (Chris) Algieri fight in November. Manny is on fire in the gym. "It was a beautiful performance on a beautiful day." In a GMA news clip Wednesday, Roach said Pacquiao executed movements … [Read more...] about Boxing: Manny Pacquiao impresses in first spar session
Algieri warns Garcia: If Pacquiao puts you down, you’re not getting up
Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines (R) fights against Chris Algieri of the US (L) during their world welterweight championship boxing bout at the Cotai Arena in Macau on November 23, 2014. AFP MANILA, Philippines—Chris Algieri gave Ryan Garcia a piece of advice about wanting to fight Manny Pacquiao, and it was one borne out of experience. In an interview with Fino Boxing, Algieri described how destructive Pacquiao is inside the ring and one shot is all it takes to turn the tide to the side of the eight-division World champion. Algieri said that Pacquiao, whom he faced and lost to in 2014, would be able to look for any advantage during a fight and Garcia’s slip-up against Luke Campbell is something the sporting icon will easily use. “From the things I saw in the Luke Campbell fight, Manny would be able to capitalize very well and if Manny puts you down you’re not getting up,” said Algieri.
