Mercedes-Benz maker Daimler will cut thousands of jobs in a bid to save more than €1bn (£860m) by the end of 2022 as it wrestles with the cost of developing electric and self-driving vehicles. The German company said it plans to slash one in 10 management roles in an effort to boost results following two profit warnings earlier this year. The company, which employs about 175,000 people globally, did not specify how many jobs will go overall. "By the end of 2022, Mercedes-Benz Cars plans to save more than 1 billion euros in personnel costs. To this end, jobs are to be reduced." It comes as carmakers are spending billions in the shift towards electric and autonomous vehicles, while Daimler also... … [Read more...] about Mercedes-Benz owner Daimler to slash jobs in electric drive

At present, India doesn’t stand anywhere close to China in the global pecking order for luxury vehicles. Yet, Mercedes Benz has deputed one of its top leaders in the giant northern neighbour, Martin Schwenk, to head up the operations at India’s biggest luxury carmaker. Despite the rising number of dollar millionaires and billionaires in India, the luxury-vehicles market continues to remain highly under-penetrated, at just 1.5% of the overall sales, against 13% in China and 10% in the US. Mercedes Benz India's new MD Schwenk in his first interview with Ketan Thakkar said that while there is a huge difference in the market size between the two neighbours, the ‘can-do’ attitude and growth’ mentality and aspiration for luxury are common growth factors. Edited excerpts: How do you look back at 2018? We sold 15,538 cars, which is 1.4% more than 2017, so not a huge increase but we are still on track in our growth story. Overall, the first half was very … [Read more...] about Mercedes Benz growth story on track; Outlook cautiously optimistic: Martin Schwenk
German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz today announced a top-level management change in India with Martin Schwenk set to take over as Managing Director and CEO from November 1, 2018. Schwenk, currently the Chief Financial Officer of Beijing Mercedes-Benz Sales Service Co Ltd in China, will take over from Roland Folger, who will assume a new position for the company's Thailand and Vietnam markets, it said in a statement. Folger has been instrumental in Mercedes-Benz regaining its leadership position in the Indian luxury car segment and in the last three years under his leadership the company witnessed significant growth rates achieving the highest market share in the luxury car segment, it added. "In 2017, Mercedes-Benz India achieved sales history by crossing the 15,000 annual sales number," the statement said. Reflecting on his stint in India, Folger said:"I am very satisfied about Mercedes-Benz India's strong leadership position in the market and our relentless efforts in creating … [Read more...] about Martin Schwenk to be new Mercedes-Benz India MD & CEO
Previous Next 1 of 13 After a false start, Mercedes-Benz has finally kicked off its multipronged electric car offensive with a crossover called EQC. Developed with batteries in mind from the get-go, it stands out as one of the most technologically advanced cars the pioneering German firm has ever launched. It will join Tesla’s growing list of nightmares when it goes on sale across America in 2020. The EQC inaugurates the EQ sub-brand, a name which stands for “electric intelligence.” It’s close to the existing, gasoline-powered GLC in terms of size, style, and proportions, but it receives an electric-specific front-end design that draws inspiration from the Generation EQ concept car we saw at the 2016 Paris auto show. The top slat in the grille lights up to connect the LED inserts in the headlights, a styling cue that gives the model a futuristic look. From the side, Mercedes designers retained the basic proportions of a … [Read more...] about Can the electric Mercedes-Benz EQC catch up to Jaguar’s segment-bending I-Pace?
