LONDON: Strawberries that would have been chomped on by tennis fans during the Wimbledon fortnight are being sent to London's NHS and frontline staff as a mark of thanks for their efforts during the coronavirus pandemic. Ordinarily the championships would have been in full flow this week, but the grasscourts remain vacant and the strawberry and cream stalls empty. Instead, with Wimbledon cancelled for the first time since World War II, the All England Club is donating 200 punnets of strawberries per day ahead of the 72nd anniversary of the National Health Service. More than 26,000 strawberries that would have been sold during the fortnight are being hulled (de-stemmed) and portioned by a group of staff at the south west London venue. REUTERS: England's national men's football team have made a "significant donation" to help National Health Service (NHS) workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The United Kingdom has overtaken Italy to report the highest death toll from the pandemic in Europe at 32,313, figures released on Tuesday showed. The players said in a statement that the donation would be made to the #PlayersTogether initiative set up to support the NHS. "This contribution will be taken from a fund already set aside to support a variety of worthy causes using all match fees collated since September 2018," they said. "We stand united as England players behind the nation during this crisis and our collective prayers and thoughts remain with all those affected." REUTERS: The Premier League must not rush to re-start its season and has to ensure there is no additional strain on the National Health Service (NHS), Watford chairman Scott Duxbury said. Professional soccer in England was suspended indefinitely last month because of the flu-like virus that has killed more than 21,000 people in Britain. The UK government's cabinet minister responsible for sport has been in talks with the league over a possible resumption in the near future but Duxbury said any decision must be taken keeping the NHS workload in mind.
