Soldiers participate in the joint military exercise (Photo: VNA) Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia and China began the annual joint military exercise named Golden Dragon 2019 on March 13 in Cambodia’s Kampot province with the participation of nearly 3,000 soldiers of both sides. This year’s drill is held under the theme of anti-terrorism training and humanitarian relief. The opening ceremony of the exercise was attended by commander-in-chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) General Vong Pisen, Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wentian and Major General Feng Xiang of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. RCAF Deputy Commander in Chief Eth Sarath told the media that the 2019 Golden Dragon had grown bigger in terms of both soldier numbers and military equipment. At the launching ceremony (Source: AP) Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand and the US jointly hosted the opening ceremony on February 12 for the annual Cobra Gold military exercise, the largest event of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region with 29 nations taking part as participants and observers. Along with Thailand and the US, seven other countries – Singapore, Japan, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Republic of Korea – were also active participants. Acting head of the US diplomatic mission in Thailand Peter Haymond said at the ceremony, held in the northern Thai province of Phitsanulok, that the aim of the exercise is to strengthen cooperation and inter-operability. There are three major components of the exercise, which ends February 22, namely military field training, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief training. Chinese military spending exceeded $145 billion last year as it advanced a program modernizing an arsenal of drones, warships, jets, missiles and cyber weapons, the Pentagon said on Thursday, offering a far higher figure than Beijing's official tally. During the exercise, each participating country sent representatives to join the combined force named CTF 18 to operate simulated campaigns to remedy maritime situations and humanitarian and disaster relief, according to the previously devised plans. Naval troops of different contingents join the exercise on computers. Seven members of the Vietnamese contingent joined four different working groups in communications, training, tactics and rescue missions. During the drills, they were tasked to deal with armed pirates, refugee issues and illegal drug trafficking. The CPX was operated using a local area network (LAN) in which participating members had to cope with a series of simulated problems as dictated by the host’s computers.
