Activist asks why the government wants public mobile phone data

· June 10, 2020 ·

The secretary-general of the Thai Constitution Protection Association has denounced government plans to ask phone operators for details of the public’s usage, which officials claim would only be used to prevent any resurgence of the Covid-19 virus. Srisuwan Janya plans to file a petition with the National Human Rights Commission today, calling for the Ministry of Defence and the Disease Control Department to be investigated. He says the government’s actions are a violation of citizens’ freedoms, rights and human dignity, which are protected under the Thai Constitution. He adds that such action could also contravene the Privacy of Information Protection Act. For its part, the MoD says it was only looking into the possibility of using the data to maintain the seemingly successful suppression of Covid-19. It says the idea arose from the cluster of infections caused by a boxing match going ahead at Bangkok’s Lumpini Stadium in early March, two days after the government had ordered … [Read more...] about Activist asks why the government wants public mobile phone data

Mobile retailers call for Amazon probe, cap on online smartphone sales

· March 2, 2021 ·

An Indian trade group representing 150,000 mobile phone stores on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to investigate Amazon 's business practices in the country and impose a daily cap on a single seller's online smartphone sales. In a letter sent to Modi, the group cited a Reuters special report published last month that revealed Amazon has for years given preferential treatment to a small group of sellers on its Indian platform, using them to circumvent the country's strict foreign investment regulations. The report was based on internal Amazon documents dated between 2012 and 2019. To read the special report click "We were already aware of Amazon's thought process and strategy," the All India Mobile Retailers Association (AIMRA) wrote in the letter. The documents, the letter said, "have revealed that Amazon is doing business in India with the strategy of deftly dodging the regulators and politicians". AIMRA urged the government to "suspend all Amazon … [Read more...] about Mobile retailers call for Amazon probe, cap on online smartphone sales

· March 6, 2021 ·

If you were waiting for PUBG Mobile to relaunch in India then there’s some bad news for you. PUBG Mobile was expected to make a comeback in India by end of December 2020 or early January 2021. But it turns out that the wait could be longer and the South Korean company-- Krafton-- which is spearheading the launch in India has nothing concrete to say about the official roll out. Meanwhile, the newly launched PUBG: New State is not coming to India. As per a report by Sportskeeda, gamers in India will not be able to pre-register for PUBG: New State. Krafton is waiting for the green light from the government to relaunch the game and no one knows as to how much time it will take or if at all the government allows the game. Thankfully, Krafton hasn’t given up hopes just yet but it would be interesting to see whether PUBG Mobile players in India will continue to have the same interest to play the game after this delay. PUBG Mobile withdrew its franchise partnership with … [Read more...] about ‘Bad news’ for PUBG Mobile fans in India

Why the Google-Motorola Deal Is About More Than Mobile Phones

· August 15, 2011 ·

With its $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility , Google has shown that it is ready to take its investment in mobile to the next level. It's important to remember, however, that Motorola Mobility does more than just make smartphones. Ostensibly, Google's decision to purchase Motorola has as much to do with increasing its patent portfolio as it is about getting into the hardware market, with Google already committing to running Motorola as a separate business . Still, we find it hard to believe that Google will just ignore the opportunity to potentially better couple its Android operating system with Motorola-produced tablets or smartphones. Google-Motorola Could Give Google TV a Fighting Chance Motorola is one of the biggest players in the set-top box space, and cable companies lease its cable boxes, DVR and IPTV components to customers. While we think it's unlikely that Google will make any major changes to this existing business, owning Motorola means that … [Read more...] about Why the Google-Motorola Deal Is About More Than Mobile Phones

Nokia & RIM Shares Jump Following Google’s Motorola Mobility Acquisition

· August 15, 2011 ·

Shares of Google initially fell by 3% in the pre-market on the news, but have since rallied to around even during early trading. Interestingly, shares of beleaguered handset makers Research in Motion and Nokia are also trading higher on the news, as investors speculate that the Google-Motorola deal may prompt further consolidation in the mobile space. The latter was trading up more than 5% and the former up more than 11% in pre-market trading. SEE ALSO: The History of Android [INFOGRAPHIC] Microsoft would seem the most obvious company to be on the hunt for a big mobile acquisition following the deal.
