The Co-operative Group swung back into profit last year after it made a clean break from its troubled banking business. The Manchester-headquartered mutual posted a pre-tax profit of £72 million in 2017, compared with a £132 million loss the year before when it wrote off the value of its stake in the Co-operative Bank. Hedge funds now control the lender and it has severed ties with the group. On an underlying basis, profit before tax rose 25% to £65 million off the back of an improving business performance and reductions in the Co-Op's cost base. Revenue for the funerals-to-food group were flat at £9.5 billion. Chief executive Steve Murrells said: "Today's results show how much progress we have made. While various food and beverage (F&B) chains continued to outperform and expand in the local market, supermarkets saw a great deal of consolidation, with the exit of French supermarket chain Auchan, who sold its portfolio to the locally-owned Saigon Co.op, according to CBRE’s quarterly retail report released on July 9. The report noted that the market has experienced positive consumer sentiment, with the Consumer Confidence Index peaking at 129 after reaching a similar level in the third quarter of 2018. More importantly, the rising effects of e-commerce and millennials’ changing shopping habits are expected to reshape the future of retail in general and the local market in particular. Saigon Co.op gets hands on Auchan One of Vietnam’s leading retailers Saigon Co.op has taken over 18 stores and the entire online retail system of French company Auchan Retail in Vietnam under a mergers and acquisitions deal. Saigon Co.op will retain the Auchan brand for the three supermarkets in operation until February 2020. The 15 closed supermarkets in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Tay Ninh will be renovated and put into operation under Saigon Co.op.
