Hanoi (VNS/VNA) - Five emerging artists or groups will have the chance to engage with traditional disciplines of Vietnamese performing arts and music via a residency programme which will start on March 1. Young artists who focus on new and transdisciplinary forms of music are eligible to apply. The artists can also collaborate with one or more artists from other disciplines such as theatre, poetry, literature, visual arts, performing arts and new media to create collaborative and cross-genre works. The artworks should be relevant to artistic materials of the five traditional music genres, namely chau van (spiritiual singing), ca tru (ceremonial singing), quan ho (love duets), tuong (classical drama) and cheo (traditional operetta). The selected artists will have access to an in-depth database of these traditional musical and performing arts and have a chance to meet experts and artists of these genres. Korean music is divided into two types — grand and aristocratic music expressing utopian idea and folk music conveying simple human emotions. Noreum Machi plays folk music. “Both forms have songs and dance but folk music has percussion also and uses traditional folk instruments and that is the main difference.” Ju-Hong has an eye for talent and selects younger members for their artistic steak. Some youngsters started off as students in the music group and after graduation have even become its members.
