The Asia News Network (ANN) will hold its annual meeting in Hanoi on September 18-19, with a view to enhancing cooperation between its 22 members. Editors and coordinators of major English language newspapers will discuss optimising the coverage of Asian affairs for 2014-2015, establishing a photograph archive and running joint marketing activities. ANN members seek to improve their news-sharing via numerous channels and technology, ANN Executive Director and President of Thailand’s The Nation paper Pana Janviroj said, adding that Vietnam development issues were also of interest. The guests will pay a courtesy call to Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and meet Vietnam News Agency (VNA) leaders. Asian News Network aims for common voice of Asia
The Asia News Network (ANN) is looking forward to developing its image as the common voice of Asia. At the ANN’s annual meeting in Hanoi on September 18, Pana Janviroj, ANN President, said the network outlined a plan to upgrade its website making it easier for members to share their photographs and videos. Janviroj, who is also the Editor-In-Chief of Thailand’s The Nations, said the ANN also trialed an initiative connecting readers throughout the region by giving its online subscribers the opportunity to access four ANN newspapers online via the network’s website. In order to develop a new generation of journalists capable of covering the region’s news, ANN would coordinate with journalism training centres in the region, and fast-track multimedia initiatives to be able to cover the region’s issues more comprehensively, he said. Vietnam News Agency inaugurates information centre in Hanoi
The Vietnam News Agency (VNA) inaugurated and put into use its information centre in Hanoi on August 11 as part of activities celebrating its 70 th founding anniversary (September 15). Headquartered at No. 21 Pham Dinh Ho Street, the six-storey building will provide a variety of mainstream source news on electronic, paper, television and audio platforms that vividly reflect every aspect of life in Hanoi. In his opening remarks, VNA General Director Nguyen Duc Loi requested the Hanoi bureau do its best to run the centre effectively. Ho Quang Loi, Head of the Hanoi Party Committee's Department of Popularisation and Training, said the opening of the centre is intended to supplement a network of VNA bureaus at home and abroad, adding that tens of thousands of VNA articles, photos and television programmes have been provided for the domestic and foreign media to spread Hanoi’s image around the world. Temporary bridge poses risk to ethnic people The Van Kieu ethnic minority people cross the Dakrong River's temporary bridge, which is supported by two sections of cables, in the central Quang Tri Province. — Photo tuoitre.vn Hundreds of Van Kieu ethnic minority people in Quang Tri Province's Dakrong Commune have been crossing the Dakrong River via a bridge held up with cables for about 20 years. The temporary bridge, made of two sections of cables, is the main contraption that helps more than 130 ethnic minority people in Cu Pua Village cross the river to reach National Highway No 9. The 20m cable bridge is the only way of entering or leaving their villages in the central province. Currently, about 40 students cross the river every day to go to school, located on the other side of the river.
