Businesses say the Bay Area is a sure bet

Chinese cultural and tourism companies are moving to gain a strong foothold in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, betting that the 11-city cluster will drive a new round of growth in the sectors with its preferential policies and massive market scale. Online travel agency Ctrip said it is working with some Bay Area city governments on developing tourism products and enhancing the quality of local tourism. For example, it is studying with Zhuhai's Hengqin New Area the possibility of launching a "City Pass", a kind of prepaid ticket booklet with which tourists can visit sites in Zhuhai and the neighboring city of Macao. Ctrip is also cooperating with Guangzhou's Nansha district on an offline tourist consultation center. The online travel services provider said it will be responsible for operation, marketing and staff training of the facility, which is expected to come into service this year. Arrests made following spate of Western Bay of Plenty thefts

Four people have been arrested following a spate of thefts targeting wallets in cars in the Western Bay of Plenty area. Police have executed a series of search warrants in Greerton, Pyes Pa, Welcome Bay, Papamoa, Bethlehem and Athentree. The warrants related to a series of thefts from cars, occurring over several recent weeks in the Western Bay of Plenty area. The people responsible would steal valuable items but target wallets, and use the cards to purchase items throughout the Western Bay, fraudulently purchasing thousands of dollars’ worth of goods with the paywave cards. Thunder Bay woman sentenced for assaulting man with rock

THUNDER BAY — A Thunder Bay woman was sentenced on Thursday after pleading guilty to charges stemming from two separate incidents from late 2020. Rayanne Shewaybick, 39, appeared in a virtual Thunder Bay courtroom on Thursday, March 4, where she pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm. She was sentenced to 90 days in custody on each offence but was given enhanced credit for the time she has served in pre-trial custody. Going forward, she has 39 days to serve in jail. Court heard one of the charges occurred on Dec. 9, 2020, after police were dispatched to a walking path near the Dawson Road area after receiving reports of four people allegedly assaulting one person. When police and emergency medical personnel arrived on scene, the victim was on the ground and had two swollen eyes and blood on his head. Water fans defied warnings to stay away from Christchurch’s coastal areas

People were still using Christchurch’s waterways on Friday, despite warnings to keep clear following a tsunami alert. Canterbury Civil Defence was sending out emergency phone alerts since midday warning people to keep out of the water and off beaches and shores, and not go sightseeing. “Due to the 8.1m earthquake near the Kermadec Islands, strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges are expected near the shore,” the alert says. No evacuation order was made in Canterbury, and the tsunami advisory for New Zealand was lifted about 3.40pm. The once-buzzing hives of culture and leisure in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area have been silenced by the coronavirus, its sweeping attacks gutting museums, galleries, theaters, hotels and restaurants of the visitors who are vital to the life cycle of this reciprocal ecosystem. Without question, the situation is dire. But there is good news. The pandemic will be defeated and when it is, the stage will be set to put in motion a wide-ranging plan that will unleash the region’s potential and see it become a world-class tourism destination, an exchange hub for culture of the East and the West, and Hong Kong strengthened as an international cultural metropolis and tourism hub.
