SINGAPORE: Mr Lee Kuan Yew, who was Singapore’s first Prime Minister when the country gained Independence in 1965, has died on Monday (Mar 23) at the age of 91."The Prime Minister is deeply grieved to announce the passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the founding Prime Minister of Singapore. Mr Lee passed away peacefully at the Singapore General Hospital today at 3.18am. He was 91," said the PMO.Arrangements for the public to pay respects and for the funeral proceedings will be announced later, it added.Mr Lee, who was born in 1923, formed the People’s Action Party in 1954, then became Prime Minister in 1959. He led the nation through a merger with the Federation of Malaysia in 1963, as well as into Independence in 1965.He leaves behind two sons – Lee Hsien Loong and Lee Hsien Yang – and a daughter, Lee Wei Ling. THE former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was sentenced to ten years in prison today. Here's everything you need to know about the once-popular and always-controversial former politician. Who is Nawaz Sharif? Nawaz Sharif is a Pakistani businessman and ex-politician who served as Prime Minister for three non-consecutive terms. He was born into a wealthy industrialist family in Lahore and is currently one of the richest men in the country with a net worth of around £1billion. Sharif served his first term as PM between 1990–93 and again in 1997 until he was removed in 1999 by a military takeover. He was elected yet again in 2013 but disqualified for life by the Supreme Court over offshore investments in 2017. What was Nawaz Sharif jailed for? Of course you must have realized that I am referring to the test match between India and Afghanistan. It was Afghanistan’s first international match and it’s a matter of honour for us that this historic match for Afghanistan was played with India. Both teams performed par excellence. Besides, bowler Rashid Khan had performed exceedingly well in the IPL earlier this year. I remember Afghanistan President Shriman Ashraf Ghani’s words on Twitter tagging me along “The people of Afghanistan are extremely, proud of our hero Rashid Khan.
