Pompeo calls for US to boycott Beijing Olympics

· March 6, 2021 ·

WASHINGTON: Former secretary of state Mike Pompeo on Friday (Mar 5) backed calls for the United States to boycott the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, saying China's "nasty" activity made it an inappropriate host. Pompeo, a vociferous critic of Beijing while he was Donald Trump's top diplomat, said the previous administration had tried in its final months to persuade the International Olympic Committee to move the Winter Games. "I hope that our athletes get a chance to participate in the Olympics. They very much deserve that," Pompeo told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt. "But in the end, we cannot allow American athletes to travel to Beijing and reward the Chinese Communist Party all the while that they (are) doing all of the nasty activity that they're engaged in," he said. "The Olympics are an expression of freedom and athletic talent. And to hold them in Beijing is completely inappropriate." A number of Republicans including former UN ambassador Nikki Haley - like … [Read more...] about Pompeo calls for US to boycott Beijing Olympics

· March 5, 2021 ·

The Queen has welcomed two new puppies to her household. For the first time in two years Her Majesty will have a couple of corgis at Windsor Castle. It is not known what the name, ages or sex of the pets are, but they seem to have come at a good time, with the monarch needing some company while Prince Philip is in hospital. “The Queen is delighted," a source told The Sun. "They have only been there a couple of weeks but are said to be adorable and made the castle their home. “Both are said to be bringing in a lot of noise and energy into the castle while Philip is in hospital.” It is thought that the dogs were a gift, filling a dog shaped whole in Elizabeth II's life. On her 18th birthday in 1944 she received a corgi called Susan who subsequently provided more than 30 descendants. The last of them, Whisper, died in 2018, leaving the Queen corgi-less for the first time in 74 years. Before her latest pair of pups, Her Majesty's only remaining dog was Candy the dorgi, … [Read more...] about Queen gifted pair of new ‘adorable’ corgi puppies years after last one died

Chess. Jeopardy. Go. Why do we use games as a benchmark for A.I.?

· March 5, 2021 ·

Growing up, many of us were told that playing computer or video games was a waste of time. However, when it comes to training artificial intelligence, not only is it not a waste of time, but it could be key to developing the intelligent agents of tomorrow. Several years ago, researchers from Google DeepMind impressively demonstrated that cutting-edge A.I. could be used to master several classic Atari games, without being explicitly taught how to play them. Since then, multiple researchers have tried their hand at reinforcement learning systems that use trial and error to learn how to master games. Now, researchers from Uber AI Labs and OpenAI have come up with a way to refine these tools even further that enables them to exhibit a high level of performance at more complex games that gameplaying A.I. agents have previously struggled with. “The new algorithm that we developed, Go-Explore, outperforms previous machine learning algorithms on many Atari games, including the … [Read more...] about Chess.
