CAPITOL HILL — It barely registered with lawmakers during disgraced lawyer Michael Cohen's dramatic congressional testimony Wednesday about President Donald Trump's alleged misdeeds throughout the 2016 presidential campaign and his first year in office. But in what could spell a major legal headache for Trump, House Democrats are investigating whether the president hid from government ethics officials hundreds of thousands of dollars he paid Cohen as part of a scheme to silence porn star Stormy Daniels about her allegations that she and Trump had an affair years before. The investigation by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform is part of a wide-ranging probe by newly empowered House Democrats that is gaining momentum two months after Democrats regained control of the chamber. At least three other House panels, the Intelligence, Judiciary and Ways and Means committees, are mounting related investigations of Trump and his associates. By Carrie Levine and Dave Levinthal / Center for Public Integrity 2:35 PM EDT New assertions, accusations and counter-accusations involving President Donald Trump’s alleged hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels are aswirl today thanks to tweets by the president and remarks by his lawyer, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. The payments and the agreement were first reported by The Wall Street Journal. Daniels sued in March to get out of the agreement, arguing it is not valid because Trump did not sign it. She has also sued the president for defamation. … [Read more...] about Was the Stormy Daniels Hush Money Illegal? Here’s What You Need to Know
WASHINGTON – Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's former lawyer, said Trump authorized hush money to two alleged mistresses because he was worried about how their stories would affect his chances for election in 2016. “He knows the truth, I know the truth, others know the truth,” Cohen told ABC's "Good Morning America" in an interview broadcast Friday. "And here is the truth: People of the United States of America, people of the world, don't believe what he is saying." Cohen added of Trump: "The man doesn't tell the truth. And it is sad that I should take responsibility for his dirty deeds.” ABC News broadcast the interview two days after a federal judge sentenced Cohen to three years in prison for campaign finance violations, tax evasion and lying to Congress. Trump has blamed Cohen for the hush money scheme, saying Thursday on Twitter that "I never directed Michael Cohen to break the law." (CNN)Donald Trump's former attorney and fixer Michael Cohen testified in detail Wednesday about the President's involvement in hush-money payments to women and his knowledge of longtime confidant Roger Stone's efforts to contact WikiLeaks, while Trump's Republican defenders aggressively worked to undermine Cohen's credibility. Cohen's dramatic public testimony before the House Oversight Committee ping-ponged between Democrats who walked Cohen through the actions Trump took and Republicans who challenged Cohen over his financial crimes and past lies to Congress. Cohen's public testimony Wednesday was undoubtedly a spectacle, but its ultimate impact will depend upon whether Cohen's allegations are viewed as credible. Cohen's hearing comes while the President has his own big moment: Cohen is testifying about what he says are Trump's misdeeds while the President is in Vietnam meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Cohen also revealed that prosecutors in New York are investigating … [Read more...] about Cohen testifies to Trump’s involvement in hush-money payments in fiery hearing
