BRITS have been left all at sea after multiple sightings of spooky "floating ships" prowling our waters. A rare optical illusion is to blame for the bizarre appearances - which have already stretched the length of the country. The latest sighting was made by David Morris as he walked along the Cornish coastline near Falmouth. He was left "extremely baffled" when he spotted a large vessel apparently floating just above the waves. Days earlier, several cruise ships were also seen "hovering" above the waters off the coast of Paignton, Devon Then Colin McCallum spotted a large red "floating vessel" on the horizon as he travelled through Banff, Aberdeenshire. He said: “When I first saw the boat, I had to do a double take because I genuinely thought it was floating. “Upon further inspection, however, I noticed that it was in fact just a remarkable optical illusion.” The phenomenon - known as Fata Morgana - is created when the sun heats up the atmosphere above … [Read more...] about Boats seen ‘floating in the sky’ around Britain thanks to bizarre optical illusion

Floating MacBook Air spotted in Apple Store
To show off just how light the MacBook Air is, an Apple Store came up with this awesome window display, yes that is a MacBook Air hanging from a balloon. OK so the balloon itself isn’t the only thing holding up the MBA, it’s also held in place by some wires, but who cares? It looks awesome and gets the point across. This is easily the coolest window display the Apple Store has had yet, and some user reports say it is being adopted nationwide. There’s a video of the floating MacBook Air below: Maybe Apple will start showing MacBook Air’s used as cutting boards too? The picture and video are from ObamaPacman , although the specific Apple Store isn’t given, that site appears to be based in Washington DC so presumably this floating Air display is from that region as well. … [Read more...] about Floating MacBook Air spotted in Apple Store
Get Picture-in-Picture Floating Videos on Mac OS X with Helium App
If you want to play a web based video while you work or multitask on the Mac, you’ll typically resize a small browser window and stuff it into the corner of your screen, right? Rather than do that, you can use a neat little free app called Helium, which creates a floating overlay of videos and multimedia that you can hover over anything on the OS X desktop. The floating video is actually quite similar to the great Picture-In-Picture (PIP) feature that is available for iPad with iOS 9, except of course, the PIP video in this case runs atop whatever is on your Mac and OS X desktop. Using Helium to get Picture in Picture mode on the Mac desktop is very simple, just do the following: Download the Helium app here (it’s free and open source) and launch it in OS X Feed Helium a URL where a web video would be, resize it accordingly, start playing, and you’re good to go When you click the Load button the Helium window loads the page with the video in Picture in … [Read more...] about Get Picture-in-Picture Floating Videos on Mac OS X with Helium App
Icebergs Float on Pluto’s Nitrogen Ocean
February 05, 2016 08:25 NASA researchers say they have have spotted iceberg-like "hills" floating on a sea of frozen nitrogen on Pluto. The hills, which are seen in the "Sputnik Planum" plane inside the so-called "heart," are from one to several kilometers across, according to photos beamed back to Earth from the New Horizons probe. NASA believes the hills are made of water ice because water is less dense than nitrogen. The hills, NASA says, move much like Earth's icebergs and are "likely fragments of the rugged uplands that have broken away and are being carried by the nitrogen glaciers into Sputnik Planum." Unlike Earth's icebergs, which move relatively rapidly, the icebergs on Pluto move very slowly and cycle around the Sputnik Planum, where they are eventually pushed to the edges over millions of years. The images also show an area called Challenger Colles, named after the space shuttle Challenger, which blew up 30 years ago, has a "large" accumulation of the … [Read more...] about Icebergs Float on Pluto’s Nitrogen Ocean
Space-starved Singapore builds floating solar farms
With little land , it has resorted to setting up energy plants off its coasts and reservoirs as part of its ‘green plan’ Thousands of panels glinting in the sun stretch into the sea off Singapore , part of the land-scarce city-state’s push to build floating solar farms to cut greenhouse gas emissions. It may be one of the world’s smallest countries, but the prosperous financial hub is among the biggest per capita carbon dioxide emitters in Asia . And while authorities have been pushing to change that, renewable energy is a challenge in a country with no rivers for hydro-electricity and where the wind is not strong enough to power turbines. So the tropical country turned to solar power —however, with little land space in a place half the size of Los Angeles , it has resorted to setting up energy plants off its coasts and on reservoirs. “After exhausting the rooftops and the available land, which is very scarce, the next big potential is actually our water area,” … [Read more...] about Space-starved Singapore builds floating solar farms
