The war on poverty: a Chinese saga

· February 24, 2021 ·

BEIJING -- China's massive anti-poverty campaign has transformed nearly 100 million lives in just eight years. It was a miracle that helped the world's most populous country achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goal on poverty eradication 10 years ahead of the schedule. A leader's promise On a crisp winter day in December 2012, Xi Jinping, who was not long ago elected general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, visited the mud-brick house of Tang Zongxiu located in the Taihang Mountains, northern China's Hebei Province. The dilapidated house was engulfed in darkness and had leakages. For two days, Xi visited multiple houses in two villages and saw similar sights of destitution. Knowing what it was like to be in penury, Xi, as the top leader, was determined to end it for all Chinese. He sounded a clarion call to end poverty nationwide, which he deemed an essential requirement of socialism. At the time, China still had 98.99 million people living … [Read more...] about The war on poverty: a Chinese saga

Georgia overpowers sluggish LSU 91-78, snapping the Tigers’ three-game winning streak

· February 23, 2021 ·

ATHENS, Ga. — After putting together two of its more complete games this season in the past two outings, the LSU basketball team was seeking to continue its run of good play of late against Georgia. Instead, it was just the opposite — a complete and total breakdown for LSU in a 91-78 setback to Georgia in Stegeman Coliseum. “Well, it was an embarrassing performance … we got whipped every way we could get whipped,” LSU coach Will Wade said. “All of our poor habits came out. They gave us a bunch of resistance, so give Georgia a bunch of credit.” But much of what they did, the sluggish Tigers did to themselves — especially in the closing minutes of the first half. After playing on near-even terms with the Bulldogs for 14½ minutes, it all started to get away from the Tigers when they were outscored 21-6 over the final 5:21 of the first half and trailed 45-29 at the break. LSU (14-7, 9-5 Southeastern Conference) was powerless to stop the onslaught once Georgia (14-9, 7-9 SEC) … [Read more...] about Georgia overpowers sluggish LSU 91-78, snapping the Tigers’ three-game winning streak

Price and more: What Canadiens must fix after firing Claude Julien

· February 24, 2021 ·

People in the hockey world are still trying to come to grips with the Montreal Canadiens’ decision to fire Claude Julien on Wednesday. Don’t blame those who are still stunned and shaking their heads. But there are plenty of people who are pointing fingers. There’s no denying, for one thing, that everything basically flows back up to GM Marc Bergevin. He’s the one who hired Claude Julien in the first place; remarkably, Bergevin’s seat seemed pretty hot then. With eight years at the helm, some wonder if Marc Bergevin’s run out of chances as Canadiens GM. While I think Bergevin has done a pretty good job the last couple seasons, especially this summer (minus Edmundson), you have to wonder how many more kicks at the can he gets. This is year 8 in charge, he already burned one core. — Andrew Berkshire (@AndrewBerkshire) February 24, 2021 That might be true, but it’s also possible that Bergevin’s already dug the sort of hole a new GM would struggle to get out of. Bergevin … [Read more...] about Price and more: What Canadiens must fix after firing Claude Julien
