Sonny Dickson has images and video of what he claims is the iPod-based interface—including a gnarly-looking, on-screen click wheel—that almost beat out iOS for the iPhone. Whether it’s legitimate or not, let me just say this: thank Christ it didn’t see the light of day. Dickson says the system was known internally as AcornOS, and the startup screen features a cute lil’ black and white acorn. For whatever reason, he doesn’t give us much of a look at the prototype device itself (why is it so dark?) but spends plenty of time playing around with the interface. Besides the aforementioned on-screen click wheel, which takes up about half screen, the alleged software also features a menu-oriented UI that will look familiar to anyone who has ever used an old school iPod. By way of proof, Dickson points to a patent Apple filed in 2006 for a “multi-functional handheld device,” which includes a click wheel. This article contains major spoilers about the end of Avengers: Infinity War.The old adage in superhero comics used to be that any character could come back to life, no matter how tragic or meaningful their death was, with three exceptions: Captain America’s sidekick Bucky Barnes, Batman’s former ward Jason Todd, and Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben. Those three deaths were seen as so crucial to those heroes’ backstories that they couldn’t be undone, no matter how good an idea a new writer might have. Then, in 2005, both Jason Todd and Bucky Barnes were resurrected. And fans reacted with near-universal approval. In short, even a casual consumer of superhero comics knows that death never really sticks in the genre. That would be antithetical to the nature of a storytelling form that stretches over decades; indeed, many of the Marvel comics published today are rooted in plotlines written more than 50 years ago. Spider-Man or Captain America or Thor might die in an … [Read more...] about ‘Infinity War’ and the Point of Comic-Book Deaths
James Gunn says he not unhappy with Gamora's Avengers: Infinity War fate. The director has largely been silent on things having to do with the Marvel Cinematic Universe lately. However, Gunn did a miniature Q&A through an Instagram story yesterday and responded to many questions having to do with his new directing gig for The Suicide Squad and the MCU. One fan took it upon himself to ask if he was "unhappy" about Gamora's death in Infinity War to which he simply responded, "No. It was all discussed beforehand." The script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was finished before Infinity War hit theaters and James Gunn was fired by Disney a few short months later. He has since been rehired, but that time away from the MCU stalled the upcoming Guardians sequel in a major way. Had Gunn not been fired, the movie would be in the post-production phase at this time. Now, he's in Atlanta directing The Suicide Squad for DC and Warner Bros., who rolled out the red carpet for him. As for … [Read more...] about How Does James Gunn Really Feel About Gamora’s Death in Infinity War?
After hyping its unveil of its long-rumored folding smartphone, Samsung kind of delivered an announcement, revealing a dual-screen folding phone prototype. “How can we make the screen bigger without actually increasing the size of the device itself?” a Samsung exec posited onstage. The company showcased a prototype of its “Infinity Flex Display,” a device that can be unfolded. In a pitch black room, a company exec showcased the device, which was housed in a larger case to “obscure the form factor.” There’s a conventional outer display on the front with a fairly low screen-to-body ration, but when you unfold the phone, there’s a massive 7.3″ display on the inside. It’s a bit surprising that the folding display is on the inside of the phone rather than the outside edge, though I’m sure it’s much easier for the company to build a reliable display if the actual folding part of the screen doesn’t have to account … [Read more...] about Samsung shares a glimpse of its folding ‘Infinity Flex Display’ smartphone
