Android Wear Review: Google’s Vision of the Smartwatch Isn’t Quite Right

· July 10, 2014 ·

The first two smartwatches based on Android Wear are shipping now. The Samsung Gear Live and the LG G Watch were formally shown off at Google I/O last month, with each device offering users access to Google's vision of Android on your wrist. Android Wear and its devices join a crowded, yet disparate market of smartwatch options. In addition to the Pebble and Samsung Gear line of wearables, everyone from Metawatch to Qualcomm to Sony have their wrists in this space. Interestingly, many of those systems are also based on Android. Still, being Google's "official" vision of Android on the wrist gives Android Wear — and by extension its devices — a certain amount of gravitas. A case of job done for Drastic Dave at Tesco? Not quite

· October 4, 2017 ·

N o wonder Drastic Dave isn’t fond of his nickname. Who wants to sound like a slightly less-scary cousin of Fred “the Shred” Goodwin? After Tesco’s latest results, perhaps chief executive Dave Lewis is in need of an image makeover. How about Doctor Dave, after figures suggesting that the patient has been successfully nursed back to health? Or Daring Dave for restoring the dividend after a three-year hiatus? Dependable too – many bosses might have been too easily tempted to undertake a frenzied overhaul, scaling the business back to the bone. Instead, faced with a colossal clean-up on taking charge, Lewis has embarked on a steady, measured transformation. It’s been slow and painful but the turnaround at Tesco has dealt with many of its biggest problems. Coming against the backdrop of an explosive fraud enquiry, Lewis will no doubt feel relieved, vindicated even. The hardest and most immediate task of conserving cash has been tackled. Under-performing stores have been closed, head … [Read more...] about A case of job done for Drastic Dave at Tesco? Not quite

Toshiba president quits; buyout spells turmoil

· April 14, 2021 ·

SAITAMA: Toshiba’s president Nobuaki Kurumatani has resigned, the firm announced on Wednesday, as a buyout offer from a private equity fund reportedly stirs turmoil inside the Japanese company. The resignation came as reports said two other funds were considering their own offers for the Japanese household name, potentially setting up a bidding war. In a statement, Toshiba said the board had accepted Kurumatani’s resignation, without giving details on why he had asked to step down. He will be replaced by chairman Satoshi Tsunakawa, the firm said. The move comes as board members raise questions about the buyout offer from CVC Capital Partners, where Kurumatani formerly headed Japanese operations. The private equity firm is reportedly offering a deal in excess of $20 billion, though there are reports that some in Toshiba see that sum as too small. The Financial Times said on Wednesday that another private equity fund, KKR, is planning to offer its own larger buyout proposal. And … [Read more...] about Toshiba president quits; buyout spells turmoil

Houthi ‘government’: War won’t stop until Saudis quit Yemen

· January 15, 2021 ·

With no signs of the six-year war that has engulfed Yemen abating, human rights organizations and international bodies continue to paint a grim picture of a country devastated by armed conflict in which civilians have often been the targets of the warring factions. What the United Nations has called the world's largest humanitarian crisis , compounded by the coronavirus pandemic, has been exacerbated by the Houthi forces reportedly engaging in wholesale human rights violations, war crimes, obstruction of international aid and rampant corruption. This week, Conflict Zone host Tim Sebastian spoke to the Houthi-backed foreign minister, Hisham Sharaf, who dismissed most of the charges as part of a Saudi media operation destined to place the blame for war crimes on the Houthi coalition. "They (the Saudi-led coalition) committed most of the crimes in this country and we know what they have done...What is happening in the international arena is what the Saudis have paid for. And those … [Read more...] about Houthi ‘government’: War won’t stop until Saudis quit Yemen
