The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has admitted in its annual report that it used "diplomatic relations" in order to force Brazil, one of the worst-hit countries in terms of the pandemic, to reject authorisation of the Russian coronavirus vaccine Sputnik V. The American authorities put their actions down to the need to "mitigate efforts" by Russia to boost its "influence" in the region, which, as the department's paper argues, would be detrimental to the "US’ safety and security". The report did not elaborate on how Brazil's approval of an additional vaccine to fight the pandemic would undermine US security. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, amid rising tensions after a Russian troop buildup across its border, on Thursday morning asked the Baltic nations to pressure members from the European Union and NATO to help the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, according to the Associated Press . Kuleba's request for Western support came after he spoke with visiting officials from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. He said he believes "words of support aren't enough." "This visit is intended to show that we stand in solidarity with Ukraine (and) strongly support this country and its right to self-defense," said Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, according to AP . Khon Kaen University on Saturday denied being pressured by the police to terminate the employment contract of American academic David Streckfuss over his political activism, saying the agreement was scrapped for professional reasons. "No police or any other state officials met and pressured the university or dean of the faculty to terminate the contract of Mr Streckfuss, as reported by the media," said the president of Khon Kaen University, Assoc Prof Charnchai Pangthongviriyakul. He said the decision was taken as Mr Streckfuss was unable to secure international students for the university's exchange programme. Assoc Prof Charnchai said Mr Streckfuss was not on the staff of the university, but an unpaid representative for the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), a US-based non-profit organisation. The former head of Israeli military intelligence, Gen. Amos Yadlin, shared in an interview with CNBC News on Saturday that stopping Iran's nuclear program will be much harder than earlier efforts taken against Iraq and Syria. According to Yadlin, Iran's nuclear program is "much more fortified and dispersed", while its neighbors' nuclear facilities were located in certain solitary places. Tehran also has "dozens" of nuclear facilities, with many of them underground. Moreover, Yadlin was not sure if Israeli intelligence was aware of all details of Iran's nuclear program.
