HOUSTON: World No. 1 Ko Jin-young is gunning for her third major win this week in Houston, Texas, hoping to claim victory at the US Women's Open, the very tournament that inspired her to pick up a club 22 years ago. The oldest women's golf major, which is celebrating its 75th year, kicks off on Thursday (Dec 10) at the Champions Golf Club with Ko among the favourites after she clinched the ANA Inspiration title and the Evian Championship in 2019. But beyond the glory of a major title, this week's event carries added significance for the 25-year-old South Korean. "1998 when I was three years old I watched the TV on my father's knee about (Pak Se Ri's) win when she won this tournament, and then I saw that I want to play the golf," said Ko. "So I started. So yeah, I want to get the US Open trophy." Pak, who won the 1998 US Women's Open in a playoff when she was just 20, is a sporting hero in South Korea and inspired a generation of young golfers. This year's tournament was … [Read more...] about Golf: Top-ranked Ko says US Women’s Open drew her to the sport

How COVID-19 has disproportionately affected women
Economic pressures, the threat to the health of millions, the change of everything we knew to be normal — the COVID-19 pandemic has changed almost every aspect of everyone’s life. It has also shown us deep inequities that were always there. In particular, there is an increasing body of evidence supporting the idea that as a group, women are being particularly adversely affected. New data shows not only is women’s participation in the workforce at a historical low, but racialized, low-income and immigrant women have been especially hard hit by the pandemic’s economic impacts. An Ontario Chamber of Commerce report released Sept. 9 on the gendered economic impacts of COVID-19 warns that while the long-term implications have yet to be seen, the pandemic’s disproportionate impact on women could undo years of progress. In today’s This Matters , the Star’s business reporter Rosa Saba talks about how this pandemic has been another setback for women and what can be done to regain lost … [Read more...] about How COVID-19 has disproportionately affected women
Commentary: Why men should care and do more about women’s issues
SINGAPORE: A while ago, I was watching the Netflix series Sex Education. For the uninitiated, Sex Education follows Otis, a teenager who starts giving out advice to his school mates after years of observing his single mother - a sex therapist - counselling her clients. In one particular episode, Otis and his mother have a huge argument that they can’t seem to resolve. In response to Otis’ stubbornness, his exasperated mother says: As the primary carer in your life, I always get your worst. And I’m tired of it. As the only son of a single mother too, I think about that scene a lot. Like Otis’ mother, almost all of the workload and responsibility fell onto my mother after my parents’ divorce. And like Otis’ father in the show, who is separated from the family, my father seemed to escape these responsibilities. He moved out, spent weekends and holidays with his friends, while my mother worried constantly about housing us, making financial ends meet and being a good parent to … [Read more...] about Commentary: Why men should care and do more about women’s issues
