Microsoft Surface starts at $499 with 32GB and Microsoft Office but without the cover-keyboard, aka, Touch Cover. Surface bundled with the Touch Cover will go for $599. (Credit: Microsoft ) Surface tablet pricing will start at $499, Microsoft confirmed today. But is that low enough to entice reams of buyers? Right off the bat, that price does have at least two things going for it. One, it comes with 32GB of storage not 16GB like the identically priced Apple iPad. Two, it comes with Microsoft Office -- for now that means Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013 RT Preview. (The final Office version "will be installed via Windows Update when available," according to Microsoft.) However, that price doesn't include the slick 3mm-thick Touch Cover (the combination keyboard/cover). Instead, Microsoft is offering a 32GB version bundled with a black Touch … [Read more...] about At $499, is Microsoft’s Surface tablet priced to move?

Apple Inc unveiled a high-end iPhone with a fingerprint scanner as it tries to stand out in a crowded market, and a cheaper, colorful plastic model for emerging markets that proved pricier than expected. Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing for Apple Inc, talks about the pricing of the new iPhone 5C at Apple Inc's media event in Cupertino, California September 10, 2013. Apple did not disclose pricing in China, its largest market, or whether it had sealed a long-awaited distribution agreement with China Mobile Ltd, although pricing is likely to be released at a Beijing media event scheduled for later on Wednesday. Details of the two models, the 5S and the 5C, had been telegraphed ahead of time in several media reports, leaving the launch devoid of major surprises, and Apple shares dropped more than 2 percent. The "iPhone 5C" comes in five colors -- blue, green, pink, yellow and white -- and starts at $99 with a contract. Apple and Samsung have ended a years-long patent battle over copied iPhone design with an undisclosed settlement, according to a US court filing on Wednesday (Jun 27). Apple and Samsung have ended their legal battle over patented iPhone features with an undisclosed settlement. (AFP/ROBYN BECK) The world's two biggest smartphone makers reached a truce in their seven-year-old court battle a month after a federal court jury ordered Samsung to pay Apple some US$539 million for copying patented iPhone features. That award was seen as a victory for Apple, which had argued in court that design was essential to the iPhone. Financial terms of the settlement were not revealed and neither company elaborated on the brief court order which dismissed the litigation dating back to 2011. "Whereas the court has been advised by the parties that the above-entitled action has been settled, all remaining claims and counterclaims in this case are hereby dismissed with prejudice," US District Court … [Read more...] about Apple and Samsung settle lengthy iPhone patent battle
A federal court jury on Thursday (May 24) ordered Samsung to pay Apple US$533 million or copying iPhone design features in a patent case dating back seven years. The logo of Samsung Electronics, photo AFP Jurors tacked on an additional US$5 million in damages for a pair of patented functions. The award appeared to be a bit of a victory for Apple, which had argued in court that design essentially was the iPhone. The case was sent back to the district court following a Supreme Court decision ro revisit an earlier US$400 million damage award. The jury essentially split the difference between Apple's request for US$1 billion and Samsung's argument for US$28 million. To arrive at a damages award of more than a half-billion dollars, jurors would likely have needed to buy into Apple's reasoning that design was so integral to the iPhone that it was essentially the "article of manufacture." The lower figure sought by the South Korean consumer electronics titan would have involved … [Read more...] about Jury orders Samsung to pay Apple US$533m in iPhone case
Jurors are set to return to a Silicon Valley courtroom on Monday (May 21) to put a price on patented iPhone design features copied by Samsung in a legal case dating back seven years. Apple-Samsung iPhone design copying case goes to jury, photo AFP Apple is seeking slightly more than a billion dollars in damages, while Samsung wants a figure closer to US$28 million. The jury has been asked to determine whether design features at issue in the case are worth all profit made from Samsung smartphones that copied them or whether those features are worth just a fraction because they are components. "Samsung isn't saying it isn't required to pay profits," Samsung attorney John Quinn said during closing arguments on Friday. "It is just saying it isn't required to pay profits on the whole phone." The three design patents in the case apply to the shape of the iPhone's black screen with rounded edges and a bezel, and the rows of colorful icons displayed.
