The study is part of DARPA's Revolutionary Enhancement of Visibility by Exploiting Active Light-fields (REVEAL) program, which is developing a variety of different techniques to image hidden objects around corners. … [Read more...] about Artificial Intelligence system that allows self-driving cars to ‘see’ around corners in real time could help prevent accidents
Self driving cars accidents
The most complex part of a self-driving system is the software that collects the data, analyses it and actually drives the vehicle. It has to be capable of recognising and differentiating between cars, bikes, people, animals and other objects as well as the road surface, where the car is in relation to built-in maps and be able to react to an often unpredictable environment. … [Read more...] about Self-driving cars: who’s building them and how do they work?
Cruise is taking a different strategy than its rival Waymo, which uses vehicles that look like traditional minivans and have human controls, such as a steering wheel and pedals. Waymo, the self-driving company of Google's parent company Alphabet, operates a limited ridesharing service in Chandler, Arizona. … [Read more...] about GM and Honda unveil self-driving car with no steering wheel or pedals
Huawei is currently making a big push towards the 5G industry, but it is also reportedly planning to assist in building self-driving cars, news portal GizmoChaina reported on Thursday."Our ultimate goal is to achieve complete driverlessness, but in the process of moving towards the ultimate goal, it can create value. At present, Tesla is already creating value for everyone, if Tesla can do it now, we can all do it," the report quoted rotating Huawei chairman Xu Zhijun. However, the company does not want to make their own cars, but will help car companies build good cars through collaboration. Currently, the smartphone manufacturer is using their expertise in 5G together with SAIC and China Mobile to build 5G connected cars. As per report, these cars have 5G/LTE-V capabilities, support C-ITS assisted driving functions, feature intelligent voice interactions and even have live video calling functions built in.Read also U.S. outlines strong support for self-driving cars at CES … [Read more...] about Huawei looks to self-driving cars, inspired by Tesla
It was both thrilling and boring, as my first experience had been. The car handled every situation with aplomb, slowing up and speeding down when necessary, finding appropriate space in adjacent lanes, and switching between them easily. A few things stuck out: For one, the car doesn’t simply detect the speed limit and then attempt to drive it. Instead, Qualcomm’s Ride uses the speed and activity of nearby cars, along with the speed limit to determine, an “appropriate” speed. You wouldn’t blow by a line of stopped cars simply because the speed limit allows you to, and Ride won’t either. … [Read more...] about Qualcomm’s self-driving car made me never want to touch a steering wheel again
