(CNN)A swarm of journalists on social media descended this week on editors of The Daily Northwestern. The student journalists exhaustively covered protests of an on-campus appearance by former Attorney General Jeff Sessions -- taking photos of students being shoved by officers, using social media to track down protestors and get their side of the story. Sharif Durhams Those actions are journalism, as disruptive as it can be to those whose lives are impacted by it. And the student journalists apologized for committing it, publishing on their newspaper's website a detailed statement of regret. In doing so, they made a mistake. Their apology was an overreaction. Since the Northwestern students are at one of the country's most prestigious journalism schools, I'll assume there are an adequate number of professors and advisers to tell them they misstepped without alumni tweeting their embarrassment and other woe-is-the-profession journalists piling on. As much as the students' … [Read more...] about Northwestern’s student journalists made a mistake. Then most people overreacted

(CNN)Last March, the Duke-UNC Consortium for Middle East Studies hosted a conference entitled "Conflict over Gaza: People, Politics, and Possibilities." A month later, Representative George Holding, a North Carolina Republican who represents a neighboring district that appears to have been carefully drawn to avoid the Democratic-leaning areas around the universities, sent a letter to the US Department of Education demanding an investigation of alleged use of taxpayer dollars to support anti-Semitism on campus. David M. Perry Now, Robert King, the assistant secretary for Postsecondary education at the Department of Education, has issued his own letter to the consortium, which is a collaborative effort between the two universities … [Read more...] about This is what a real threat to campus free speech looks like

(CNN)It was a powerful television moment: the ex-US ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch, listening to a snippet from a rough transcript of President Donald Trump -- the man who ousted her -- predicting to a foreign leader, "She's going to go through some things." "It sounded like a threat," Yovanovitch testified during her public hearing before the House Intelligence Committee Friday. Then to top it, Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Schiff read aloud a fresh Trump attack on Yovanovitch, tweeted in the midst of her testimony: "Everywhere Marie Yovanovitch went turned bad," Trump wrote. "She started off in Somalia, how did that go?..." Asked about the tweet, the veteran ambassador, who worked for 33 years in the State Department, responded, "It's very intimidating." "Let's be clear: his tweet was terrible," Republican … [Read more...] about What Rudy and ‘Three Amigos’ were up to

(CNN)When I went to Ukraine on a mission with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in the spring of 2014, shortly after Russia invaded Crimea, the first thing security officers told me was to avoid, at all costs, speaking about sensitive matters over landlines and mobile phones. "Assume that all conversations are being listened to," they said. Michael Bociurkiw As the world's largest regional security body, with a long-standing presence in Ukraine, the OSCE has a keen understanding of who listens to what, and why. Whenever I train incoming international observers, I begin each session with strict orders never to talk business where curious minds might be lurking -- not only on the phone but also in bars, … [Read more...] about Sondland’s unsecure phone call with Trump was pure amateur hour

(CNN)When our team at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe first heard of the downing of a Malaysia Airlines jet over Ukraine five years ago Wednesday, one of my colleagues predicted the incident would be a game changer -- perhaps even triggering US intervention in the war with Russia in eastern Ukraine. Michael Bociurkiw Surely a red line had been crossed. As CNN New Day's John Avlon put it, the attack on Flight MH17, which killed 298 civilians, was one of the two "defining crimes of our time" -- the other is the murder of the Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi -- and would not go unpunished. MH17 was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on July 17, 2014, one of about 300 flights that passed each day over eastern Ukraine. Many were … [Read more...] about With no justice for MH17 victims, what’s to prevent the next attack?
