The city needed a strong leader. It got that and more. The Chronicle’s front page from Dec. 5, 1978, covers the swearing-in of Dianne Feinstein as the city’s first female mayor. “Feinstein was elected mayor of San Francisco yesterday in a historic vote that may alter the course of city politics for years to come,” the story read. The reporter, Chronicle political correspondent Jerry Burns, was right. Feinstein became one of San Francisco’s most effective leaders, finishing the term of assassinated Mayor George Moscone and then being elected twice. She was a moderate who took over for a staunch liberal, and her strength proved pivotal in a time of upheaval in the city that would give way to major growth in the 1980s.
