Swimming: Phelps says world records unlikely in Tokyo

· December 11, 2020 ·

LONDON: Michael Phelps said the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic means it is unlikely any swimming world records will fall when the postponed Olympic Games are held in Tokyo next year. American Phelps, 35, won a record 23 gold medals over four Olympic Games and is widely considered to be the greatest swimmer of all time. Phelps believes most swimmers are putting in the necessary work but that they are at a big disadvantage given limitations on training and the one-year delay to the Games. "There are kids out there who are controlling everything that they can control. They are swimming like they should be, they are lifting," said Phelps, who set 39 world records during his career. "But honestly, I think pushing it back by a year throws a bigger loop into it than everybody thinks. "The best of the best will fight back and you're going to see some fast swims. But world records? I don't think so. "With all these pools being shut down, somebody would have to be … [Read more...] about Swimming: Phelps says world records unlikely in Tokyo

Farmers/herders crisis: Group cautions against constant attacks on President Buhari

· February 15, 2021 ·

Kindly Share This Story: Some middle-belt leaders have denounced Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State over his persistent attacks on President Muhammadu Buhari. The group, under the auspices of the Middle Belt Conscience Guard (MBCG), warned the governor to focus on governance rather than habitually inciting Nigerians against Fulani herders. The MBCG, at a press conference in Abuja, described Ortom’s assaults on President Buhari and Fulani herders as “uncomplimentary and a grand plot to orchestrate widespread public violence in Nigeria.” In his address, Alex Samuel, the Secretary of MBCG’s Board of Trustees, said the governor’s antics is aimed to divert attention from happenings in his state. Samuel noted that Ortom capitalizes on the slightest opportunity to criticise Buhari whereas in his state people die daily of hardship and starvation. According to him, while President Buhari has entrenched durable peace between farmers and herders, Ortom … [Read more...] about Farmers/herders crisis: Group cautions against constant attacks on President Buhari

Denmark to cull entire mink herd amid mutation fears for COVID-19 vaccine

· November 5, 2020 ·

COPENHAGEN: Denmark will cull its mink population of up to 17 million after a mutation of the coronavirus found in the animals spread to humans, the prime minister said on Wednesday. Health authorities found virus strains in humans and in mink which showed decreased sensitivity against antibodies, potentially lowering the efficacy of future vaccines, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said at a press conference. "We have a great responsibility towards our own population, but with the mutation that has now been found, we have an even greater responsibility for the rest of the world as well," she said. "The mutated virus in mink may pose a risk to the effectiveness of a future vaccine," Frederiksen said, adding that it "risks being spread from Denmark to other countries." The findings, which have been shared with the World Health Organization and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, were based on laboratory tests by the State Serum Institute, the Danish … [Read more...] about Denmark to cull entire mink herd amid mutation fears for COVID-19 vaccine

Pakistani film explores social media’s role in anger over blasphemy

· December 9, 2020 ·

ISLAMABAD: The creator of an animated film on blasphemy in Pakistan is hoping it will prompt discussion on tolerance at a time that rights advocates say hate speech on social media is increasingly triggering violence. The short film called Swipe is about a boy obsessed with a hypothetical smartphone app that allows people to vote on whether someone should be killed for blasphemy and offers a glimpse of a stark future of what rights groups say is a worrisome present. "The screen is what alienates people and what they say through a screen they probably wouldn’t say to another person in front of them,” Arafat Mazhar, the director of the 14-minute animated film, told Reuters. Blasphemy is a crime in Pakistan and officially carries the death penalty. While no executions for blasphemy have been carried out, enraged mobs sometimes kill people accused of it. Rights groups say the blasphemy law is often exploited to settle scores and increasingly it is accusations made on social … [Read more...] about Pakistani film explores social media’s role in anger over blasphemy
