The city where cars are not welcome

Eckart Würzner, a mayor on a mission to make his city emission-free, is not terribly impressed by promises from General Motors, Ford and other big automakers to swear off fossil fuels. Not that Würzner, the mayor of Heidelberg , is against electric cars . The postcard-perfect city, in southern Germany, gives residents who buy a battery-powered vehicle a bonus of up to 1,000 euros, or $1,200. They get another 1,000 euros if they install a charging station. But electric cars are low on the list of tools that Würzner is using to try to cut Heidelberg’s impact on the climate, an effort that has given the city, home to Germany’s oldest university and an 800-year-old castle ruin, a reputation as a pioneer in environmentally conscious urban planning. Texas and Mississippi Say It’s Time to Reopen Without Masks. Live Venues Say No Thanks

When Governors Greg Abbott of Texas and Tate Reeves of Mississippi both rescinded statewide mask mandates this week and declared their states were reopening at full capacity, the news caught live music venues in both states off-guard. It also left them with a decision to make: follow their governors’ rosy decrees or maintain the Covid-19 safety protocols they’ve had in place for months. Despite Abbott and Reeves’ enthusiasm — “I just announced Texas is OPEN 100%. EVERYTHING,” Abbott tweeted on March 2nd; “It is time!” Reeves followed — the majority of club owners and operators Rolling Stone spoke to in Texas and Mississippi are choosing to remain cautious, adhering to proven pandemic safety guidelines so that a night on the town doesn’t become a super-spreader event. Gilgeous-Alexander has 33, helps Thunder rally past Spurs

SAN ANTONIO - Oklahoma City and San Antonio are fighting fatigue and injuries, but the Thunder found a way to win a battle of attrition heading into the All-Star break. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 33 points and Oklahoma City rallied in the second half to beat San Antonio 107-102 on Thursday night and snap a two-game losing streak. “Our guys did a heck of a job hanging in there,” Oklahoma City coach Mark Daigneault said. “The thing that stood out to me was just our resiliency. We were down 11 at halftime. It’s easy to pack it in. You have a break two quarters away but our guys buckled down and continued to play.” Mike Muscala added 18 points, and Luguentz Dort had 15 for the Thunder.
