Tropical storm to land in the north

The first tropical storm of the year is expected to bring high winds and rain to northern Vietnam, warns the National Hydro-meteorological Forecasting Centre. Storm Con Son (named after a well-known historical site in Vietnam), is forecast to be off the coast from Quang Ninh province to Hai Phong City - 21.3 degrees north and 107.9 degrees east - at 1pm on July 17. Wind gusts of up to 102kmph are likely. Heavy rain will fall in northern provinces, especially the northern highlands, says the centre. Provinces such as Ha Giang, Lao Cai and Lang Son have been alerted to possible flash floods and landslides. The eye of the storm was at 16.5 degrees north and 113.9 degrees east, about 190km from the Hoang Sa (Paracel) Archipelago in the East Sea, at 1pm on July 15. It was expected to generate rough seas in northern waters with waves of between 5-7 metres. Year’s first tropical storm gathers force in East Sea

VietNamNet Bridge - The first major tropical storm of this year named 'AERE' , today has strengthened on the eastern Philippine coastal area, causing rough seas and strong winds in north-eastern region of the East Sea, reports the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting. Winds will be as strong as level 6 or 7 on the 12-level scale. At the heart of the storm, the wind can reach level 9 at a speed of 75-88 km per hour or even stronger. The storm is forecast to move towards the north-eastern ward then to the north - north eastern ward at speed of 15-20 km per hour. At 1pm today, it is expected to be around the north of Philippine's Luzon Island and it is expected then to travel 90 kilometres further north to Taiwan. Tropical Storm Kaitak slams Northern Vietnam

Tropical Storm Kaitak changed course from the East Sea to hit the northern parts of Vietnam with wind speeds of 118-133 kph, bringing with it torrential rainfall across the region since the night of August 17. Since mid day yesterday, the northern parts of the Gulf of Tonkin, including Ha Long Bay, experienced rough seas and winds of 40-62 kph. At the center of the storm, wind speeds were stronger, at about 63-87 kph, together with gusts of 103-117 kph. After passing through Leizhou Peninsula in China, in the Gulf of Tonkin, at 10am yesterday the storm was centered at an area 390 km east-southeast of the peninsula. By 7pm the storm was located 100km east of Mong Cai, with wind speeds of 62-88 kph and gusts of 88-117 kph. Tropical storm KaiTak to hit Quang Ninh

Tropical storm KaiTak will make landfall in the border areas of Mong Cai city in northern Quang Ninh province in the night of August 17, but the storm will be less powerful than the previous day, local weather forecasters said. The Central Steering Committee on Flood and Storm Control held an urgent meeting in Hanoi on August 16 afternoon to prepare for the storm. The committee's chairman and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat called on ministries, sectors and localities to monitor the storm's progress closely in order to inform people of the necessary precautions in a timely fashion. The National Hydro-meteorological Forecasting Centre director Bui Minh Tang said the storm's centre was located 450 km north-east of Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago afternoon of August 16. Tropical storm ‘Bebinca’ intensifies in East Sea

According to the National Hydro Meteorological Forecasting Center, the tropical low pressure system has intensified into tropical storm 'Bebinca' early this morning, June 21. Bebinca is the second storm to occur on the East Sea this year. At 7am, the storm was located 18.1 degrees north latitude and 116.1 degrees east longitude, about 440 kilometers east northeast of Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands. Strongest wind speed near the eye of the storm was at level 8 to move at 62-74 kilometers an hour. The storm is forecast to move northwestwards at 15 kilometers an hour in the next 24 hours. By 7am on June 22, Bebinca will be located 20.1 degrees north latitude and 113 degrees east longitude, 220 kilometers east northeast of Hainan Island in China.
