Pedagogy schools find it hard to attract more students though the government has made considerable efforts to lure good students including tuition fee exemption. According to the Government’s Decree 116, students in pedagogy schools will receive an amount of VND3.63 million per month as living expense from November 2020. Thus, in addition to total tuition fee exemption, students in special schools currently receive the most preferential treatment; however, few good students refused to enroll into pedagogy schools. Ex-Cop Who Shared Explicit Pics of Slain Student Seeks Millions in Compensation
Five ex-officers from University of Utah Police, including the former chief, are claiming at least $10 million for "permanent and irreparable career damage" after they were accused of mishandling the case of slain student Lauren McCluskey . A copy of the former officers' legal notice against the university, submitted to the state attorney general's office, was first obtained by The Salt Lake Tribune via a public records request. The five include Miguel Deras, who showed explicit photos of McCluskey to male colleagues in the days leading up to her death. McCluskey, a 21-year-old student at the university, was shot dead on October 22, 2018. Her ex-boyfriend, Melvin Rowland, was suspected of the killing and took his own life hours later. McCluskey had reported Rowland, 37, to the university police after the couple's break-up in early October, because he had sent her messages threatening to release "compromising images" if she did not pay him. McCluskey had forwarded the images … [Read more...] about Ex-Cop Who Shared Explicit Pics of Slain Student Seeks Millions in Compensation
Students to lose jobs after Ford government axes school programs
Nearly 100 students will be laid off from their part-time jobs at the Toronto Catholic school board because the programs they work for are being axed by the Ford government as part of the province’s $25 million funding cut to school boards. Those job losses are just the “tip of the iceberg” because all of Ontario’s 72 school boards are being impacted by funding cuts or reductions to specialized grants. “It’s deplorable and despicable,” said Toronto Catholic District School Board chair Maria Rizzo. “Kids will suffer in the long run (by the cuts).” A report by the board’s staff to its trustees outlines which of its programs have been impacted by the cuts and reductions because of the 2018-2019 funding changes to EPO (Education Program-Other). Cancelled programs include the Focus on Youth’s after-school program, which operates in high-needs urban neighbourhoods and employs about 60 part-time students, mostly from high school. Also on the chopping block is the Tutors in the … [Read more...] about Students to lose jobs after Ford government axes school programs
Ontario education cuts to hit vulnerable youth the most, students say
Ontario’s education minister calls them “responsible decisions” that were made following a detailed look at school board spending, but a provincial student group is warning that at-risk youth are taking the biggest hit in the government’s $25-million cut to specialized programs . “A lot of these programs are there to help students who are more vulnerable — those students will be the most impacted” by the loss of programs, said Amal Qayum, president of the Ontario Student Trustees’ Association. “We urge the government, moving forward, to make decisions after consulting all stakeholders, especially students.” On Friday, the PC government sent out a series of emails to school boards, announcing cuts and changes to funding for EPO — “other” education programming — that had been pledged by the previous Liberal government last spring. Focus on Youth, which provided after-school jobs and programming for youth in high-poverty neighbourhoods, is gone, as are $2,500 Speak Up grants, … [Read more...] about Ontario education cuts to hit vulnerable youth the most, students say
Family of Brit student who drowned sue boat firm after 3-year mystery over death
The family of a British student who drowned on the Great Barrier Reef are suing a boat firm in a bid for answers after three painful years. Tashfeen Mirza, 20, died while on a group snorkelling trip 30 miles off Cairns, Australia. He was a capable swimmer and his family want to know how he could drift off without being noticed. They also claim there was a delay in launching a search after a pal raised the alarm. Tashfeen’s brother Janaed, 25, said: “He was a decent swimmer and loved being in water. How can someone snorkelling just disappear? After three years we still don’t know what happened. “The conditions were great. There is no way Tash should have ended up a kilometre away without being noticed. Another boat was acting as a lookout but they clearly failed to see him.” Tashfeen, who studied economics in his home city of Sheffield, was among dozens of tourists on the 60ft catamaran Reefkist when he vanished. Official reports say he was last seen on board at 12.30pm on … [Read more...] about Family of Brit student who drowned sue boat firm after 3-year mystery over death
