The world's largest carmaker has been trimming prices on various models in its lineup at the same time legacy automakers are trying to make inroads in the electric vehicle market by launching their own electric cars. Tesla said it delivered 139,300 vehicles in the third quarter, an all-time record, yet shares fell as some analysts doubted if Tesla could hit its ambitious year-end target. Global investor group urges United States to rejoin Paris climate accord

· November 4, 2020 ·

LONDON: A group representing European and US investors with a collective US$30 trillion in assets urged the United States to quickly rejoin a global accord to tackle climate change on Wednesday (Nov 4), as a decision by President Donald Trump to leave the pact came into effect. The group, whose members include big investors such as New York-based BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, warned that the United States risked falling behind in the race to create a cleaner global economy by leaving the 2015 Paris Agreement. "Recommitting to the Paris Agreement would provide an important policy signal, helping unlock additional flows of investor capital to support sustainable growth and job creation across key sectors of the US economy," Stephanie Pfeifer, chief executive of the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change, said in an email to Reuters. The coalition of European and some US funds joined other investor groups in Asia, Australia and New Zealand in issuing a … [Read more...] about Global investor group urges United States to rejoin Paris climate accord

Commentary: Welcome to the post-coronavirus United States of despair

· June 18, 2020 ·

PRINCETON, New Jersey: Well before COVID-19 struck, there was another epidemic running rampant in the United States, killing more Americans in 2018 than the coronavirus has killed so far. What we call “deaths of despair” – deaths by suicide, alcohol-related liver disease, and drug overdose – have risen rapidly since the mid-1990s, increasing from about 65,000 per year in 1995 to 158,000 in 2018. The increase in deaths from this other epidemic is almost entirely confined to Americans without a four-year college degree. While overall mortality rates have fallen for those with a four-year degree, they have risen for less-educated Americans. Life expectancy at birth for all Americans fell between 2014 and 2017. That was the first three-year drop in life expectancy since the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 to 1919; with two epidemics now raging at once, life expectancy is set to fall again.
