Britons chase online grocery slots in coronavirus crisis

· March 30, 2020 ·

LONDON: British supermarkets are frantically trying to build up their online operations during the coronavirus emergency but no matter how hard they work they will not have enough capacity to meet unprecedented levels of demand. That has prompted the industry to call on Britons able to safely visit a supermarket to do so, leaving precious online delivery slots for the elderly and vulnerable. With Britain in lockdown, analysts estimate about 25 per cent of food purchasing has switched from cafes, restaurants and bars to the grocery retail sector as people adapt to the new way of living. Prior to the health crisis about eight per cent of British grocery demand was ordered online, with 92 per cent bought in stores. But major supermarkets are reporting demand has surged to about 75 per cent of people wanting an online delivery. Last week online supermarket pioneer Ocado said it had around 10 times more demand for its services than it did before the outbreak began. It has stopped … [Read more...] about Britons chase online grocery slots in coronavirus crisis

Local universities cancel in-person examinations, move assessments online

· April 3, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE: Nanyang Technological University (NTU) will be cancelling all undergraduate on-campus exams, quizzes and tests scheduled between Apr 6 and May 8, following the COVID-19 developments in Singapore. All other forms of assessments that do not require students to be physically present on campus, such as projects, reports, essays, presentations and assignments will continue, and can only be submitted online, said the university in a memo to students and faculty on Friday (Apr 3). For courses where in-person continual assessments and exams are cancelled, course grades will be computed based on each student’s existing continual assessment scores, said the memo signed by deputy president and provost Ling San and senior vice president (administration) Tan Aik Na. The memo was sent after Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced on Friday that all schools and institutes of higher learning will implement full home-based learning, as part of tighter social distancing measures to … [Read more...] about Local universities cancel in-person examinations, move assessments online

OPINION: For online students, the challenges of pandemic learning are nothing new

· March 2, 2021 ·

Everyone is anxiously awaiting the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. Once it is over, businesses can fully reopen, families can be reunited and friends can spend time with each other once more. The pandemic has taken its toll on everyone, but college students have been particularly hard hit. Many had to leave their dorms, fly home and adjust to online learning for the first time ever when schools closed. Students who had never taken classes online before found it frustrating and inconvenient. Fortunately for these students, they will be able to return to in-person classes when the pandemic is over. However, not all students will be going back to campus. RELATED: Campus Conversations: Thoughts on online class There are many of us, including myself, who have never even set foot on campus. We are the online student community, the actual online student community. Since before the pandemic hit, we have been online learning from afar - in the shadows if you will. The problems and … [Read more...] about OPINION: For online students, the challenges of pandemic learning are nothing new

2,300 polytechnic and university students asked to return from overseas placements amid COVID-19 pandemic: MOE

· March 30, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE: About 2,300 students in the Autonomous Universities and polytechnics have been asked to return from their official overseas placements “as soon as practicable”, said the Ministry of Education (MOE). Responding to questions from CNA, a spokesperson for the education ministry said it was working closely with institutions and Singapore's overseas missions “to provide the necessary assistance and support for these students”. “This includes providing advice and/or financial support to students who may need help with the cost of returning earlier than expected to Singapore,” said the ministry. “Alternative learning arrangements will also be made available to these students so that they are able to meet their academic requirements, at no additional cost to them.” MOE and the Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) announced on Mar 15 that all overseas placements, including internships and exchange programmes would be suspended until the end of July. Dating in the time of COVID-19: Chat online, meet much later

· March 19, 2020 ·

NEW YORK: With governments clamping down on social interactions to contain the coronavirus spread, dating sites are discouraging dates and asking users to get to know each other virtually instead. "We don't know who needs to hear this, but now is NOT the time to go out with your date to a bar," leading match-maker OkCupid tweeted on Monday (Mar 16). "FaceTime, Skype, call, text, call, message on our app ... all very romantic right now," it added. Dating sites contacted by AFP refused to divulge their traffic since COVID-19 starting shutting down US cities this week but it appears their usage is far from slowing. Even if some academics would like them to suspend their activities entirely. "It's time to shut down Tinder and all online dating services," tweeted US writer Matt Stoller. "No more internet-enabled interactions among random people until the #coronavirus crisis has passed," he added. Joking about the coronavirus has become popular on dating sites, although not … [Read more...] about Dating in the time of COVID-19: Chat online, meet much later
