Singaporean police (Photo: AFP/VNA) Singapore (VNA) – Supporters of the Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and Syria have named Singapore as part of its “East Asia wilayah”, a move that analysts say could embolden foreign fighters to carry out attacks here, according to Singapore’s English language daily newspaper Strait Times. In a paper recently published by the S.Rajaratnam School of International Studies, senior analyst Jasminder Singh believed that together with Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and southern Thailand, Singapore is singled out on social media as part of the wilayah. Between late 2009 and … [Read more...] about How safe is traveling in Southeast Asia?

In the latest changes to its list of unsafe airlines barred from flying in the EU, the European Commission added Iraqi Airways as a result of “unaddressed safety concerns” and removed Kazakh operator Air Astana. The commission, the 28-nation EU’s regulatory arm, said no curbs on Thailand-based airlines are warranted “at this time,” while stressing that it and the European Aviation Safety Agency would keep a close eye on standards in the country. “The commission and EASA are willing to continue to work with the Thai authorities to enhance aviation safety in the country,” the Brussels-based regulator said in a statement on Thursday. “The commission and EASA will, however, closely monitor future developments and, if the protection of air passengers against safety risks so requires, the commission … [Read more...] about Thailand avoids European airline curbs as EU vows scrutiny
The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) has recommended travel agencies and tourists consider revising their travel plans to Thailand in the wake of recent bombings in Bangkok with many casualties, including one wounded Vietnamese. The VNAT said on August 19 that it advised travel companies to actively work with their partners and Vietnam’s representative diplomatic offices in Thailand to devise measures ensuring the safety of their Vietnamese clients. It stressed that travel agencies should not guide tourists to vulnerable areas or crowded places with high risks while focusing diligently on security warnings in their destinations. The companies were also told to immediately notify Vietnam’s diplomatic agencies and the VNAT about any arising issues for timely responses, the administration said, adding that though Thailand is a magnet for Vietnamese tourists, it has also had a host of recent security concerns.
