IT could be the hottest summer in a decade as a 32C blast is set to hit the country within weeks, say forecasters. La Nina, a climate pattern, will play a large part in the spike in warm weather. Jim Dale, meteorologist for British Weather Services, said: “There will definitely be some spikes of heat as we go into summer when I expect to see temperatures in the high 20Cs or even the low 30Cs. “This is largely because of a balancing effect which, after the colder period of weather over the past couple of months, dominated by a northerly airflow, should revert and come from a more southerly direction. “This will bring more in the way of hotter weather as we go through the end of spring and into summer. “This summer could be up there with the warmer ones from the past ten years, it is more likely to turn out one of the warmer ones that to be cooler.” Read all the latest weather news and updates in our live blog below... Texas has work to do to avoid another energy crisis
Texas’ massive energy crisis didn’t have to happen, experts say — and it doesn’t have to happen again. Authorities can start working on solutions now that could prevent future blackouts. But unless the state gets to work fast, its energy system will be vulnerable to the next shock. For starters, Texas’ grid needs to prepare for more blows from extreme weather, and the change can’t stop there. Upgrading homes and buildings is a straightforward way to keep people safe during catastrophic conditions like this week’s cold snap. Emergency response efforts need an update, too. Michael Bates, general manager of Energy at Intel, lives in Austin where he and his mother have not had power for three days. “She’s 86 years old and living like a pioneer woman in front of the fireplace,” Bates says. “To me, it’s unnecessary. There is technology today that, if we deploy properly, the next time this goes around, the pain will be much less.” Bates is working to develop smart grid technology at … [Read more...] about Texas has work to do to avoid another energy crisis
Gladiators plagued by steroids, booze, corruption and assault, says ex host Ulrika Jonsson
THERE is no doubt about it, at its peak it really was the greatest show to ever grace ITV’s screen. With weekly viewing figures at 14million, a huge, intricate set, vast rigging and production crew, a cast of dancers, performers and a couple of average presenters, this was light entertainment on a scale previously unseen. I am, of course, talking about Gladiators . Without a shadow of a doubt, it was one of the greatest shows of all time — appealing to young and old, all shapes and sizes, and with enough catchphrases to make Cilla Black blush. And I was hugely privileged to be part of this magnificent spectacle. But yesterday’s mugshot of our biggest and most frightening Gladiator, Shadow — aka Jefferson King — looking hollow-cheeked and well beyond his 59 years, on a charge of a drug-fuelled blackmailing plot, is a stark reminder that the show had its fair share of scandals. Shadow was the most intimidating Gladiator. He may have been overwhelming in size, but he … [Read more...] about Gladiators plagued by steroids, booze, corruption and assault, says ex host Ulrika Jonsson
