Ho Chi Minh had been patient, diplomatic, persistent but polite. Now the time had come to take off the velvet glove and reveal the iron fist, writes Laura Lam in the 22nd part of her series. Although the French didn’t officially declare war against Viet Nam until December 1946, in reality French troops had forced their way back into Sai Gon the year before. They had military assistance from the British. Leading his troops, General Jacques Leclerc announced his entry to Sai Gon on 24 September 1945, “We have come to reclaim our inheritance”. Upon hearing Leclerc’s statement, Vo Nguyen Giap wept. Vo Nguyen Giap’s Liberation Army, August 1945 As he witnessed more human losses and suffering on both sides of the ongoing conflict, Ho Chi Minh tried to reconcile with the French. In January 1947, he wrote to Jean Sainteny, who was Charles de Gaulle’s emissary to Viet Nam. “There are already enough deaths and enough ruins! What are we to do … [Read more...] about Taking sides

Manifest destiny: planner looks westward for growth of Ha Noi (08-01-2005) Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Xuan Thao has a plan to expand Ha Noi to the west and modernise the city centre. He spoke about it with Thoi bao kinh te Viet Nam (Vietnam Economic Times). What is necessary to make your expansion plan come true? I have made some funding suggestions for the expansion. Funds can be raised from auctioning land use-right. However, the plan will also require investment from sources other than the State budget. Vu Bang is a proud father of two children - a second grader and a little boy attending kindergarten. He is also proud of his motorbike driving skills and how good his little daughter is at sitting on the bike. Bang drives the little girl to a nearby primary school on his way to the office. Moreover, a helmet on her head would hinder my view while driving." Seeing that I was skeptical, he assured me: "Don't worry. I am an excellent driver. And even if she sat behind, she would hug me tightly and would not fall." "What if the police stop you for not putting a helmet on her?" "See, she looks small for her age. I would tell them she is under six." Under … [Read more...] about Has the kids’ helmets controversy come to a head?
WELCOME TO AFP'S LIVE REPORT on the news that Alex Ferguson will retire from Manchester United at the end of the season, bringing down the curtain on one of the most successful careers football has known. "The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It is the right time," Ferguson said in a statement released by the club. "It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so," added Ferguson who will bow out with United having won this season's Premier League. The club gave no indication of a successor amid press speculation that Everton's David Moyes could fill the Old Trafford hot seat vacated by fellow Scotsman Ferguson. United did say, however, that Ferguson would remain at United as director and official club ambassador. His final game in charge will be against West Bromwich Albion on May 19. Ferguson, who had recently insisted he would be continuing … [Read more...] about Alex Ferguson retiring: Live Report
