However, the moves to develop medical tourism in Vietnam appear to be slow. According to statistics released by the Ministry of Health, Vietnam earns nearly US$1 billion from medical tourism per year, whilst the profits from this field in some other developed countries, including the Republic of Korea and Singapore, stands around US$900 million. A growing number of foreigners are flocking to Vietnam for medical tourism even though the industry, which has been promoted in Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines, is new to the country, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) said in a recent report. The radio broadcaster reported that Vietnam has become famous throughout the world for its traditional medicine such as acupuncture, with a large number of skillful doctors, including Dr. Nguyen Tai Thu, a world-renowned acupuncturist. Many leaders and officials of foreign countries have been treated successfully by Vietnamese specialists in that Asian traditional medical procedure. VietNamNet Bridge –Advanced high-tech treatment and services are attracting more local as well as foreign patients to hospitals in Viet Nam, according to the Ministry of Health. Speaking at a recent conference, Dr Tran Quy Tuong, deputy head of the ministry's Disease Treatment Management Department, said that local patients were foregoing trips abroad to seek medical care. Foreign patients are often combining tourism with medical treatment in the country, a growing trend that has occurred in a number of developing countries with high quality medical care. Organ transplants, cardiovascular interventions, laparoscopic surgery and advanced obstetrics are some of the services that attract patients to the country.
