What's RISC-V, and why do I care? RISC-V is a CPU ISA (Instruction Set Architecture) family, like x86_64 (the architecture in most PCs and laptops) or ARM (the architecture in mobile phones, tablets, and the new Mac M1 and Macbook Air). Although RISC-V isn't known for being a particularly "powerful" architecture so far—you can broadly expect either x86_64 or ARM CPUs to be faster than a RISC-V CPU at the same clock speed—it's incredibly power efficient, and it's much more "open" in terms of intellectual property than either ARM or x86. The RISC-V ISA is permissively licensed—meaning literally anyone is allowed to design, produce, and sell RISC-V CPUs without the need for either fees or complex license negotiations. Seeed Studios—the makers of the Odyssey mini-PC we reviewed back in August—have teamed up with well-known SBC vendor BeagleBoard to produce an affordable RISC-V system designed to run Linux. The new BeagleV (pronounced "Beagle Five") system features a … [Read more...] about Move over, ARM: BeagleV is a $150 RISC-V computer designed to run Linux

5G vs. Wi-Fi: How they’re different and why you’ll need both
The 5G era is here, and while it hasn’t necessarily brought about the mobile revolution some expected, it could well do so in the next few years. Current 5G tech delivers minimal improvements to download speeds, but eventually it should dramatically improve download speeds, nearly eliminate latency, and reduce congestion on mobile networks. In other words, 5G is going to give Wi-Fi a run for its money. While Wi-Fi and 5G will be pitted against each other, all signs point to us likely needing both technologies to fully take advantage of the internet of tomorrow. While 5G will undoubtedly come in handy in many situations, Wi-Fi, which is still being developed and updated, will be useful in other situations. And they could end up working together, such as in the case of 5G home internet. What’s the difference between 5G and Wi-Fi? We have a detailed explanation of what 5G is , but in brief, 5G is the umbrella term for the fifth generation of mobile network technology, and it … [Read more...] about 5G vs. Wi-Fi: How they’re different and why you’ll need both
